I put a 6" lift on my 79 Bronco(basically a F-150) with NP203 and my drive shafts are short, and wondering what's the best way to fix this problem?
The front is about 1/4" off and the rear is closer to 3-4", I got a quote to lengthen front and rear and I was told about $250.
If I can't do anything about it, but lengthen then is there any place you guys may know of that'll do it for less cash(on a tight budget).
Is it possible to get a longer front yoke or somthing, because I don't need more than 1/4" on a adjustable front driveshaft.
The rear isn't adjustable, any ideas there???
I lengthened my front shaft by buying a used slip yoke from the boneyard for $5. You'll need one from a Ford truck, Cheby used different splines. Just measure yours, figure out exactly how much more you need and go from there. If that doesn't work out and you need it lengthened $250 for 2 shafts is a decent enough price. I know it always seems like too much money but I doubt you'll find it any cheaper. If it makes you feel any better the quote on my new front shaft is over $700 . . . so it could always be worse.
another suggestion expecially on the rear shaft is to get one from a F150 and have it shortened, you can also do that for the front shaft just look around the wrecking yards for one that is slightly longer that uses the same size ujoints. Reason I suggest this is it's a lot cheaper to shorten them than it is to lengthen them I think it cost me $76 including tax to have both of mine shortened.
If you're really handy with a grinder and welder you can even shorten them yourself but of course making sure they're balanced is a whole new issue. Great suggestion Rob!
I do have a longer driveshaft that came from a 79 Bronco with a 205, same u joints and all, so I might be able to shorten that one for the rear and find a longer slip yoke for the front axle right? Where do you suggest I find one(which truck, or web site)?
I have a '77 F150 w/ a Np205 and my rear D-shaft is looong. If fact, it has a short D-shaft coming out from the T-case an runs to a carrier bearing. Then my rear D-shaft runs to the rear axle. Check the JY's for an F150 LWB. That would probably be a good canidate for shortening.
MonsterBaby is right. Shortening the shafts is much cheaper than lengthening them. They must put a new tube in your shaft to make it longer. Sounds kinda kinky...hope you don't get a kink in your shaft. Anyway, assuming they are going to balance them and make them work perfectly again, I'd just pay the 250. Nothing like NOT having goofy vibrations while running down the road at 70mph. I'm sure that is chumpchange compared to how much money you have invested in you lift.
I have a longer drive shaft for the rear that I could shorten, but I still need to get a longer slip yoke for my front axle, what truck could I get this from, or should I just buy a new one?
I don't remember the year but the yoke on my front driveshaft is off of a Ford truck REAR shaft. I couldn't tell you if it was an F150, 250 or what but it fit perfect.
I NEVER get that lucky at the yard! Oh wait, I did find 202 camel hump heads once that I put on my vette engine. However, I mean it, when it comes to drive shafts, I always get the shaft.
Ivan, you are talking about a yoke to go into the axle or diff, and not the transfer case right?
monster baby, where did you get your driveshafts shortened? I would like to shorten a shaft I already have, expecsially since it's cheaper to do that than lengthen.
Well I got mine shortened at certified powertrain in DesMoines Iowa but i doubt that helps you much. Look in yellow pages for driveline shops there is almost always one in every area somewhere in my case I had to drive 50 miles to get it done but I prefer to have it done right, and since I don't have the jigs or the balancers I let someone else with that equip do mine (one of the few things I didn't do myself)
I was just wondering if it was the same company I talked to about lengthening. I'll try and call the one in my area Driveline somthing, that is also about 60+miles away(a big down side to small towns).
