I went to start my truck, first it wouldn't crank, then after waiting a minute it started but a loud noise that sounds like a piece of metal in a ceiling fan on medium speed. Anyone know what it could be before I shell out the money I don't have. Thanks.

Or you starter is locked to your flywheel. That can be very noisy also.
I agree that it could be the starter. I had the same situation last summer. It was the solinoid that is mounted on the starter. The contacts in the solinoid were probably burnt and caused it not to function properly. Sometimes it would not enguage. Other times it would and not disenguage. That was when I would hear the "metal in the fan" type noise. I had to replace the starter.
Thanks to all, in response, I have a 4.2 V6. I kind of thought it was the starter too, but not quite sure. I'm going to have to look at that before I call anyone. Hopefully that's it. It probably doesn't help that I don't run it too much in the winter because I have a company truck.
