New GPS software?

Is it possible to upgrade GPS software in a car for factory installed GPS systems?

You mean like the maps and stuff or the software that reads it all?

I mean the software. I thought I had seen some advertisement that is a completely new install. BUT, maybe there is something that allows new maps.
