Hi,
I'm new to the site; just started reading some of the threads the other night to try to identify the problem with my truck and it seems that there is a copious amount of good info and tips, so I thought I'd give it a shot!
My truck is a '89 F-250 with a 5.8L, which is actually a rebuild that was installed about two years ago. I only recently bought the truck and it ran well for the first couple of weeks, but now, when in gear, it seems to be missing at idle, accompanied with quite a noticeable voltage fluctuation. When in neutral or park it still misses, but the voltage fluctuation seems to clear up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
A. Jack

When was the last time you had a good tune up and new Battery? The low voltage tells me that there is a problem possibly with the battery or the Altinator. The idling rough says Idle Control valve is dirty or bad and missing sounds like the timming is off a **** hair or your plugs/wires are bad... Possibly coil... If its been a while since you had a tune up i would go ahead and go that... what can that hurt anyways.. and put a idle control valve on it and go from there.
forget the mechanic and do it yourself. a tune up is easy just install some regular autolite plugs, new plug wires, cap and rotor. invest in a timing light and set the timing to 10*btdc with spout connector removed. once its set then reconnect the spout . take the IAC off and clean with some throttlebody cleaner and also look into replacing your fuel filter. Get a haynes manual to give you step by step instructions. you will save yourself some bucks by doing this yourself. Dont be scared all this should take maybe 2hrs of your time at most
