Only three months to complete my project on the bed of my truck. The panels were in bad shape and needed to be completely stripped to metal and straightened. Then I coated them with Dupli-color bedliner. I removed every bolt possible and replaced them with stainless bolts. The bushings were replaced with neoprene rubber. The wood (ebay special) was a pain to work with and I had to recut, reshave it to work. Never again!. The wood was treated with Minwax Cherry stain. The I applied 7 coats of Minwax Helmsman Urethane Varnish, sanding between each coat. I had to cut the square holes on each stainless strip. That was fun!. The bolt kit was from Fatfenders and worked out real nice (thanks Dwayne). I can't say it was an easy project, it had its challenges but the results were well worth the effort. It felt pretty good standing back and looking at it when it was all done. Its amazing what new wood does for the appearance of the truck. I took a few pictures of the process and they are in my gallery if your care to look under Bed modifications. Here a pic of the finished bed.
Randy, I knew putting the 3 months would get your attention. LOL..... It wasn't 2 years, it was 1 year 11 months and two days and 48 posts to complete my brakes. I actually surprised myself with the amount of time it took to complete the bed? I figured out how I could get things done while still being a babysitter. LOL......
Hey Ed. Nice work. I've been wanting to do mine. 3 months.. not bad considering kids and weekends. Did you take the advice on bolts under the bed. Looks like you did. Nice job.
Ed,
I know you had some tough spots working on your bed but Holy Cow!! the results are awesome!! If I were closer I'd buy you a beer and clap you on the back while giving you a big "atta boy!"
great looking job! I actually don't mind some variation in the boards, shows it's real wood instead of plywood. What did you end up using to cut the holes square?
Did you use the roll on bedliner? I used their spray can bedliner for my firewall, but find it as fragile as paint.
Ed, your truck is really looking sharp! I hope to start installing bedwood in a couple of weeks, It will probably have to wait til after christmas. I hope to see your truck in person and to meet you one of these days. Thanks for all the "tips"
