Clutch Problems
Hello. I am fairly new here to this forum. Been reading here for some time but have not posted anything recently.
I have two questions I hope someone can answer. My vehicle is a 2001 F 250, PSD, with a six speed manual. Everything stock, 41000 miles. I bought the truck in 2002 used with appr. 8000 miles on it.
My first question concerns the clutch pedal. When it is pushed in, I hear what I can only describe as a squeek. At first it sounded like a throwout bearing going out. It has been doing it since I had the truck. It sounds like it is in the pedal. It makes the sound when the truck is cut off as well. I have a friend with a similar truck who told me that a plastic bushing in his clutch pedal (under dash) went out on his and he was in traffic and from what he said, essentially his clutch was disabled, almost having a wreck. Since that, I have gotten a little more concerned about the problem.
A month ago, I had to replace the slave cylinder and at that time, thought the sound would go away. It did not. Any ideas? If it could be this bushing, how difficult is it to replace?
Second question (not so lengthy I hope): Also about the clutch and transmission. When shifting, and usually when not towing, I hear a clunk coming from under the truck. Don't know if it is in the trans or if it is the driveshaft. I did read a post sometime ago about the universal joints going bad. Any suggestions are appreciated.
I bought this truck to haul a camper. Since that, I got recruited to pull my son's band trailer. It seems the majority of the time I am in it I am pulling one or the other.

the clunk- does it happen when hitting bumps or uneven surfaces at moderate speed, such as pulling into an uneven driveway, or cornering hard? if so, it may be your front swaybar bushings, at the axle/swaybar location. these tend to fail prematurely on alot of trucks. look at EnergySuspension's parts, they have nice replacements. the part is 4-5186.

I would seriously consider replacing the crappy factory pilot bearing (the input shaft from the 6 speed runs on it) with a solid Kevlar piece. The bearing WILL eventually fail and if you don't get to it quickly enough WILL damage the trans. What I did, and recommend, is to replace the clutch with a LUK (or South Bend) clutch, put in a Kevlar bushing, put in a new PLASTIC fork pivot, and a new fork. The pedal feel is about half of stock but the gripping power is increased since the clutch comes with a new flywheel and a 13 inch pressure plate vs the 12 inch stocker. I seriously thought I was going to shove my foot through the floor it was that light. Like a Honda at first, then it firms up a little bit.
The clunk might be your bushings, it might also be your splines in your carrier bearing joint. This is the correct grease to solve that particular problem. Mostly I hear about it being on automatics, but that might be because there are so many more of them.
