Hey folks, I have a 1993 F-250 w/ 7.3 tdi with a banks sidewinder turbo, with an E4OD behind it. Here's my problem. When the engine/transmission pair is cold, the truck runs great, but once up to operating temp, the trans seems to not want to drop into a lower gear smoothly (ie, it shudders and makes a funny noise). The truck had a smaller muffler than it should have had when I got it, (2 inch), and I took it off, thinking that possibly the egt was running higher than it should and breaking down the tranny fluid in the cooler lines. I haven't had the chance to try it out since then, but I was wondering if anyone else has had any similar problems, and what they did to fix them. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
Sounds like a possible torque convertor clutch not unlocking. Does the TCIL light on the gear shift flash, can you read the trans codes or visit Autozone they will do it for you. Put your location in a signature with full truck info up top at quick links.
Hi
My 93 does this rumble/shutter in and out of overdrive. I was told by a transmission shop that it was the torque convertor. Are they correct? If so, does anyone know a good/cheap place to get a torque convertor or should I just have my whole tranny rebuilt like the shop suggested.
Thanks
If the O/D lite is flashing and you have rough shifts, get the codes. Code 62 seems to always show up with other codes, disconnect batteries for a few min's then drive and see what code come up. Code 62 is the torque converter clutch. If it is the T/C and you are getting rough shifts the pump is putting out more pressure to compensate for the cluch slip. If you have to change go with a up-graded T/C and put in a "code 62" kit in the pump
Before you have it rebuilt you might want to check out this site. I bought a transmission from them last March and it has run great ever since. They also sell torque converters but my experience has always been bad with just replacing the torque converter. I got every upgrade possibe for my tranny and even with renting a chevy Tahoe from Budget rental and driving from just north of L.A. to Phoenix I still managed to save about $450 over picking up a bone stock transmission locally. If you give them a call ask for Andrea, he really knew what he was talking about. http://www.phoenixhardparts.com/
