steering column

I have a small problem that I hope someone might be able to help me with.
I have a 77 f-150 2wd that had a bad steering column. I found a nice one at a salvage yard out of a 79 2wd, I swapped it into my truck and the problem is that the steering feels stiff. You know how when you take a corner, after rounding the corner you let go of the wheel and kinda let it slide through your fingers or hand and the truck will straighten out? Anyway, if i let go of the wheel on a corner the truck would just go in circles. I unbolted it at the rag joint and spun the wheel to see if anything was binding. No problems, the wheel will spin effortlessly. When i bolt up the rag joint it is real stiff agian. I hope this makes sense and someone could give me an idea.
Thanks, steve

Hi, How was it before you put new one in? And how long did it sit? I was doing some work on mine last year and it sat for a few months, that let rust get to the king pins, and they frooze-up alittle. Jacked it up and greesed it, with turning the wheels back and forth. That freed it up . Now it is fine. I would check the whole frontend to make sure everything else is ok.Erv

I'm with Irvin, doesn't take them long to freeze up if they're not used and haven't been greased regularly. I've had a couple that were so gunked up I had to heat the axle just to get the grease to go in.

steering column

I just bought the truck in september in santa clara, utah. Drove it home to minneapolis, mn. It steered and drove great, just didn't like the column that was in it as it was all scratched and banged up. That is why i can't figure out why when i bolt this column up it is so stiff, but if i leave the column in the truck and unbolt it from the rag joint it will spin as free as can be. Which tells me there is nothing binding in the column itself.

I'm pretty sure 77 and 78-9 takes a different rag joint. Maybe that could be a problem.

Sounds like your steering gear is too tight and needs to be adjusted. Try backing the adjusting screw on top off about half to one turn.
