97 awd front axle

Hi,

I have a 1997 aerostar awd. The front axle on the passengers side went on it right at the wheel. I was able to remove the axle without any problem, but in order to install the new axle, it is looking like I am going to have to unbolt the control arm. I think I am going to take it into the local shop. The question I have is can I drive it about 10 miles without the axle in place. I think I remember somewhere that this will ruin the wheel bearings without the axle stub stuck through the inner race?

Any comments?

Just a comment. When I replaced my two front axles the control arm didn't have to come off. But the shocks have to be removed to fit the new axle in place.

I don't have awd and only worked on fwd drive axles. I don't believe the drive axle is necessary for bearing survival.

To install the CV Half-Shaft (or axle as you call it), you only need to remove the following:

1) Shock.

2) The rubber front suspension bumper near the shock.

All that was done just so there is room to put the new Half-Shaft in. You will find that once those things are out of the way, you have plenty of room.

Thanks everyone - that is what I did and as it turned out I had to have some weight on the control arm to compress the spring in order for the axle to fit. Took me less than 1 hour to complete this job.

The 30mm axle nut must be really tight, 170-200 ft-lbs.

Welcome!

Glad to see that you got it fixed with little issues.

How is the half shaft retained on the transfer case side, is it a push in and snap in system?

Hi Ken:

The new half-shaft is bolted to an adapter (which has a grease cap on it) with two bolts, which also serve as guide pins.

The whole thing is then bolted to the differential flange with 4 bolts.

Very easy to swap out if you remove the shock and the rubber bumper.

Why? Are you going to change out yours?

I bought a new (not rebuilt) assembly from Autopartsgiant.com for about $74 with free shipping.
