I am looking at buying a performance chip for my 2004 F-150 with a 5.4 liter engine.>>
Does anyone have any experience with the chips? I want increased gas mileage but not necessarily performance! In my 1998 F-150 the chip required me to use 93 octane and the mileage was the same - no reason to buy.

I really don't think there is a programmer out there that really increases mileage. I have an '04 4x4 XLT extended cab with the 5.4 with the Hypertech programmer and a K&N filter. Before the programmer was installed, I recorded an average of 13.2 MPG. After the programmer, I recorded 13.4 MPG for the entire month, but I have a lot of variables plus the temperatures make a difference. Another thing, Hypertech has tuning for 87 octane or 93. I have only programmed mine for 87 due to the price of gas and the amount of miles I drive. I run 89 octane because it pings with 87 under 3/4 to full acceleration. So to answer your question, if you are thinking about buying a programmer for performance and to kill the dead spot, it is money well spent, but for mileage, take the $300 and put it to the gas tank.
Welcome to FTE F150RedMan. A tuner is a great addition to any 04 truck. I have a Superchips tuner on my 04, and it really woke the truck up! No one can guarantee a mileage gain with these things. It relies heavily on driving style, elevation, gasoline, etc. Its a very tough thing to nail down. I will tell you though, I managed to gain 1.5mpg with mine. That cant be said for everyone. Hope you get the answers you seek. See you around the boards!
