I recently noticed a fuel puddle underneath my truck, (70 F 250 Sport Custom) and today my brother and I took the skid plate off of the tank mounted inside the frame hoping it was a line problem....well it wasn't. I had about 8 pinsized holes towards the front on the bottom of the tank. The tank came out pretty easy, but finding a replacement tank was difficult. I ended up finding a tank for a 73 at O'reilly. The only problems we encountered was that the replacement tank is a couple of gallons more, the vent and filler holes were reversed. We replaced the hoses and installed a longer vent hose to accomodate the switch, and fabricated some steel to hold the tank....solid as a rock! It took most of the day, but it was fun.
I will keep this in mind as I have a 72 with the same problem, I had no idea of what I could replace it with. Thanks for the tip FFCross! How different is the filler hose location and what has to be done to make it work?
The filler hose is pretty much in the same place. The trouble I had was with the vent hose. On my original tank, the vent was towards the front of the truck, and on the replacement tank, the vent was towards the rear. I got a longer piece of hose to make the extra couple of bends to make the connection, and used my original filler hose. It fit just fine.
What trucks had these Aux tnaks!? I do want to remove the one behind my bed and put one under the box for add'd weight in the rear-end.. ( Sorry. Not tryin to steal thread..)
Hi MacOffutt, the 72 f100 2x4 parts truck I bought is the first that I have seen. Not common but afew were around. Like an earlier reply has mentioned a 73 and up f100/150 front fuel tank may work mounted under the box. Another idea is to mount it in the rear where the spare tire is between the frame.
I have an aux tank on my 70 F250 Camper Special. It was an option, but I don't think they are too uncommon. You should be able to find one in a boneyard. If you get an aux tank from a later model keep in mind that the frame width changed around 73, I think. Anyway, make sure it's gonna fit before you waste time or money on one. The older frames are narrower, so it's a tight fit for a tank.
One more thing to consider with adding an auxilary gas tank to the '72-ish CS, is that it takes a weird gas filler hose. I understand that the incredible price tag is a result of the gas hose having two different sized ends, and a squished metal tube inside, to prevent it kinking between the bed and frame.
