I have a 1954 F-250 with a 223ci I6 and a 4 speed on the floor. I have no idea what the rear is. I took some pics of it and you can view them in my gallery. I have searched around the internet for days and I haven't found an answer...or even a hint as to its identity. Please help!!
It appears that the info you have supplied speaks for itself, the ratio is 4.85 to 1.
Simply speaking your drive shaft turns 4.85 times to complete 1 revolution of the rear wheel. I presume this is what information your question is aimed at, if it is not then I don't understand your question.
I'm sorry, I wasn't specific enough, I am trying to figure out what kind it is (Ford, Dana, ect..). Also, if it is any good, like will it hold up to a mild 300ci engine?
That is one real tall ratio, and a 300 C.I.D. won't bother it at all. The only problem you will have with it is that the engine RPN's will be rather high and probably get along at around the 55 mph mark.
You could go with a 9 inch rear which is a real tough one, and the gear ratios are wide spread there. That is if your looking for a good road gear. Being that you already have thee low gear in the transmission for the pull if thats what you need. You will also have the high gear for the road speeds. Hope this will maybe give you a better look at the choice.
As far as the make i.e. Dana, or whatever, I really can't tell you.
Thanks for the info guys!! If I decide to swap out rears how much do you think i could get for mine. Could i use any newer f-250 rear?. I want to keep the 8 lug so i can use the same wheels.
To answer you first question, yes these are pretty tough rear ends and I've not heard of anyone tearing one up. Then again, most folks with engines that would tear something like this up are not using this rear end beacuse of the high gear ratio, lack of suitable rims for the 8 lug pattern, etc. It will do just fine behind a 300 six and is proably a pretty good rear end for that engine. You should be able to pull a pretty good load with that set-up.
As stated earlier, you probably have a very high rear end gear ratio in that thing. Not sure what you have behind that 300 six for a tranny. Best way around the high gear problem would be a tranny (auto or manual) with a good overdrive gear. Much easier to adapt a rear cross member than moving shock mounts etc. (IMO)
I put a dana 60 out of a 69 F-250 in my 53 F-250. It was an honest to gosh bolt in job. Can you imagine that?
I believe anything from 57 to 72 F-250 will work you just have to shop for the ratio you want. Mine is a 3.73 and it's the best thing I've done to improve highway driving.
Well I am all for using the rear I have now. I just didn't know anything about it. Thanks again for the input! I haven't looked yet but I'm sure I could find a trans pretty easy. What trans would you guys recomend? I'm not ruling out finding a new rear either, but it may be my best option right now as I'm trying to keep the costs down.
