Okay, so as I have said before on other posts....I am new to the ford truck world....I have only had rice burners and kraut burners in the past......
So I am digging around my motor ('77 460) and I find this diamond shaped plate (though the corners are rounded) that is bolted to the intake manifold, next to the carb, on the passenger side. It has 2 holes in it, and they have metal tubes that go down into (???). I think I have an exhaust leak coming up through there???? It is coming out through where the plate mounts to the manifold....I looked through my Haynes manual and cannot find anything about it.
I, too am new to Ford trucks. I have a 460 in my F150 and a spare that I'm hoping to rebuild someday. Both intake manifolds have the exact same plate you describe. As far as I can tell, those are extra vacuum hook-ups. I don't know what they're for since both motors have them capped off. Possibly cruise control or anything else that might need a vacuum line.
Those tubes connect to the choke on your carb. If the stock carb has been swapped out then they are not needed. Under that plate there is a "port" (for lack of a better name) that goes to the exhaust. It heats those tubes and controls the choke. Hope this makes sense.
it is starting to make sense...there is nothing connected topside to the 2 holes...they are just....there........I have no idea if it is a stock carb....it is a Carter...that is all I have been able to figure out....I know the cruise control is disconnected, I don't know why....but it is.....so.....hmmm....any idea how I can seal up the exhaust leak there? I used high temp RTV on it, but it only worked for a few weeks.....
If you have the tools available(cutting torch or plasma cutter) you can cut a new one out of plate steel. Or you can run a couple of small bolts in the holes.
You might check with PAW. Performance Automotive Warehouse. You can do a search and find it on the web. They had a block-off plate to cover the one for my 351c
Thats the choke tube heat coil that goes in there.
That *Heat WELL* area does not contain vacuum it is just a hot area for heating the vacuum going through the tube.
If both tube holes are exposed, there is nothing affected.
Unless you think is looks ugly ,leave it alone,it's not doing any harm.

If it is leaking. You can unbolt it, clean it up and make a new gasket for it. Somtimes those tubes can rust and leak. I made a new plate and bolted it in.
actually, the leak is coming from between the intake manifold and the plate. The tubes are in good shape....I tried to pull it completely out, but it would only come out about 5 inches before it would hang up on something down inside (this is with the carb on, air cleaner off). I was afraid to pull twisat, or reef on it to much withouit knowing what was going on down below, out of sight. And when I tried to remove it...one of the bolts snapped off at the manifold (despite liberal application of penetrant)...*sigh*
So now I have to learn how to get that broken bolt out. Then find a method that is going to permenantly seal the opening to get rid of the exhaust leak and its accompanying noise....I have got what is otherwise a sweet sounding truck. Welding is not an option...I do not have access to the equipment....any other suggestions?
