If this is the wrong place to ask just tell me where good forum is that covers ford cars. I restored a 1963 ford galaxie 500 xl that has a 4 speed manual trans. sometimes, actually often, if I'm not paying attention, when I shift gears the trans will hang in gear even though the shift lever moves, causing me the have to stop and realign the shifter with the trans. How can this be corrected if possible using the orginial shift lever ( it has the lift gate to allow reverse) or must I change to an after market shifter such as Hurst. Does anyone know it there is such a thing that will work in this application? Thanks
If it were a top loading truck transmission it would be caused by warn shift fork in the transmission, or some related part. Does the shifter go directly into the case or is there some linkage between the shifter and the trans?
I once had that type problem with a floor shifter, where it would lock between gears while shifting. It was due to wear slop in the shifter itself that would allow it to come out of the one arm in neutral without engaging the next arm. You may be able to rebuild the shifter but replacing it with a Hurst would be the best solution.
the original shifter on those cars weren't great when new and they get really bad when old and worn....you probaly have a BW t10 trans, I think Hurst still has shifters avaliable for them..it well worth the money for the diffence in how they shift..think I paid about $125 for the last one I bought
