Another post about an explorer with a rear end whine. After pulling it apart once and changing some parts (clutch pack) with no change the dealer agreed to replace the entire differential with a new one. It's quiet now and I hope the replacement will not develop the whine again. The original only had 45000 Km on it. The whining noise on mine was during acceleration between 80-95 Kmph. If you let up on the throttle the noise would stop. Don't let them tell you your tires are noisy if your convinced it's the rear end.
I'll keep that in mind if it develops again after my warranty runs out. From the dealer's perspective I guess it had already been pulled apart once and to do again versus replacing unit was better for them. I wasn't going to argue. I wish they would do that with my tranny. It's going in again next week to have them pull it out again for the third time in a month.
Same thing happened on me on wifes 03 XLT 2wd. Dealer kept trying to say that it was everything else. Knew it wasn't. There troubleshooting guide only has two actions Diff replacement is the the second. Bad news is 50,000 second diff is starting to whine, so I'll start this all over again.
