2.9l wont start

2.9l wont start
I was driving to work, and it bucked and quit. Engine spins easy ( no load ) but nothing. So the wrecker brought me home. I am on the end of my last nerve with this 2.9.
I thought I had a timing chain problem, symptoms say Timing Chain.
I was all the way to pulling the balancer, and my mind kept telling me it isnt the chain,, test farther. So I bought a code tester and the light came on and and stayed on ( no Numbers )..Then I remembered i didnt have to disconnect the that stupid little black wire,that joins the neg terminal. Stuck the bat back in, plugged in the little black wire, turned the key and instantly felt stupid
.. buttoned it back up and its ready for the next adventure.
