I need to replace the shocks on my 98 Exp XLT. Current mileage is 88000. I just discoverd that the front Trailmaster shocks that I installed at 53000 are both leaking. Granted they have a lifetime warranty but what good is it if the dealer needs to send them back to the factory and this will tie up the vehicle for at least a week.
Comments on the Trailmaster shocks: They work well offroad- I use the Exp on the beaches of Cape Cod, but the ride is somewhat stiffer than I want on paved surfaces. If I could get the same off road performance, just slightly softer ride on the road I would be very happy. I also don't want to have to replace shocks every 25K miles.
I'm looking for recommendations and comments for a set of shocks with lifetime warranty (with instant replacement) that provide a good ride on paved surfaces ( this is wife's commuter and long distance family vehicle) and perform well offroad in conditions similar to what I use the vehicle for.
I've used Bilstein, Edlebrock IAS, Rancho 3000, RSX, and 9000, and I like the ProComp adjustables the best. They are 5-way adjustable gas pressure shocks. They work great on the rear of my 02 'Gator. Excellent control and road manners, adjustable for your needs. I just wish that they made an air verson for my front.
I'm not sure about the warranty, but if you have a 4-Wheel Parts near you, replacement should be easy.
I have Bilstiens on my 99. It's on the NJ state beaches all the time. They're a little stiff on the highway with the truck empty but great with the family and all our crap on board. I'd rather have controllable stiff than the OEM boat like wallow.
I If had the cash, I buy the Bilsteins without hesitation. But I am doing my absoute best to pay off my credit cards with every extra dime I have.
Nevertheless, I have a 100,000 miles on my 99 4.6XLT 4x4 and I feel like new shocks are in order. I plan to keep the beast another 50,000 miles
What's the best value out there/ I don't have to find the rock bottom price, but somewhere in between would be nice.

Any Thoughts?
Yeh, one - New shocks were in order 50,000 miles ago. I have the same vehicle. Besides new shocks, new bushings and front sway bar links are also in order. New shocks made a big difference in the drivability of my 99. It actually handles now.
Rancho RSX's on my Expy work great. They don't allow suspension lean and ride very smoothly. I would recommend them to anyone. Plus the guarantee is unbeatable.
I tried Pro-Comp, they were horrible. I had them on for 1 day, took them off and sold them because of the horrible sway I had when I had to brake at high speed (I almost lost control because the rear end swayed so bad). I have one big thumbs down for Pro-Comp. They were the ES3000 model.
PS, you want gas charged shocks, trust me.
