400 timing

Hello all:

I have a 1978 400m that was rebuilt a year ago. It has a wiand intake, holley 750 carb (probably too much), It is only cammed slighty over stock, pistons are 8.2:1, and it has a mallory unilite dist. with a hyfire ignition. My question is, what timing do you think I can get away with? Im around 16 degrees now. If you need any more info let me know.

Thanks, Jdog

Give it as much initial timing as you can get away with. 16 sounds like a lot, I'd be surprised if you get much more than that. Any idea what your total advance is?

Always check damper is right on. I have seen alot of them slip as time goes on. You are setting timing to what feels good and for starting so if timing seems way up it probably has slipped. I always mark it on both sides of rubber and this will show slippage. If they start slipping, replace or have it rebuilt! Flying parts suck and costly.

335s like a lot of total timing, 39 - 42 degrees where I live and pinging no problem. You may want to set total around there then check inital. Initial timing does not mean a whole heck of much, total is most important. As long as engine starts when hot, initial timing is good. There is a hole can of worms on timing, you have to go with what works for you. No pinging and it starts, go drom there for power or fuel mileage
