Plugged in the truck last night b/c it was supposed to be colder than its been(was plugged in for at least 8hrs). When I went to start it it was like it was never plugged in? Is there a way to check this out at the plug? Is there something else that could be wrong?
The cord disconnects at the heating element. You can check for continuity from end to end. Not sure what the resistance should be, but that will help give you an indication if it is the cord or the heating element.
Thanks for the reply! It's supposed to warm up in the next couple days so I'll check it out then. If the plug and heater seperate can I buy them seperately? Thanks again!

I'm going thru the same thing u are right now. I found my cord went bad at the heater end. Open line on both the hot and neutral. The orange colored heater end pulls right out of the block connector. I ordered a new one for $53 online
@http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214083 The stealership wanted $73! it's just a heavy duty heavy guage electric cable with a special plug! Part# 1C3Z6B018AA...just plug this number into the approriate box.
Well curiousity got the best of me, I went out and measured my block heat from the plug up front. Measured 15.2 Ohms everything cold, probably right around 18 degF this morning. I am thinking this is probably about right as that would put about a 8-10 amp load from 120. Anyone else know what there element reads out?

U got it right...ohm's law...i read the same as u around 15 ohms.
Since you brought up the subject of block heaters, how do I tell if my 01 SD 7.3 has one? There is no tell-tell pigtail hanging out of the front grille. I bought it used; were block heaters standard or options? Thanks.

Should have one...crawl under your truck and look above the oil filter. If it has one it will have an orange wire coming out of the block proceeding forward to the bumper.
I have one dumb question:
Can we start our truck with the plug connected?
I am going to be buying a Remote start and want to know how that would work with plugging in the heater cord.

I have a remote starter that the previous owner installed...no problem starting with the heater plugged in. Fast heat up! Is good!

You have to crawl under the front and fish the wire out from near the fog lites, license plate area. It ain`t easy, trust me ,but its there. They are a standard accesory back in 01. Newer years its like a 35.00 option.I ran a 1.6ft pigtail from plug up to my bumper. I can`t see bending down to plug her in
Hope this helps
My uncle always told me you should never run the motor when it is plugged in because the tiny air bubbles in the cooling system stick to the heater and cause it to overheat and burn pin holes. Not sure if this happens all the time but it makes sense. Just my .02
