97 Ranger xlt

Hey guys I am currently looking at a 97' Ranger XLT. It is a white extended cab with a 4.0l 5spd. It has 4x4 with manual locking front hubs. Its in great shape 104,000 miles. No leaks, good clutch, nice tires. the only thing I know of is that the one front qtr panel was repainted but it was never wrecked. From what I've read though the 4.0 of this year only had 160hp? This is my only set back at this point. What do you guys think.

by the way I have a 98' 2.5l xl right now and I hate its guts. If only it had some.

Sounds like a great truck, grab it. The 207 HP SOHC didn't get put in the Ranger until 2001, so if you're looking for more HP, you'd have to go newer. FWIW, the OHV pushrod 4.0L and the SOHC 4.0L share similar torque specs at the lower and middle rpms, it's really only at the higher rpms that the SOHC pulls away from the OHV.

Yep, grab it sounds great! Manual hubs rock, glad they are on there. I have the 4.0L/5 speed combo, it's good and it'll get ya there quickly, even at only 160 horses, it's plenty for this truck!

ummm. sounds pretty high to me. I"m selling my '96 4x4 3.0 automatic with a fresh tranny for $3900. I would say you could do much better in price than that. Keep looking.

I have that truck (97 4.0 4x4 Exteneded loaded 105k).

I went on NADA earlier and found low retail to be aprox. $4700 and high to be approx. $6700. (in Jax FLA)

I'd go lower for a top notch machine. (unless you want mine.. hahaha)

check kelley and edmunds websites for values, too. I have a 97 ranger, and I only gave 7900 for it four years ago.

Make sure you look at local prices, not nationwide averages, and average several of the sources together and show that to the seller.

If you lived a little closer to PA maybe we could talk about that Ranger. haha I think I'm gonna try to get the guy to sell it to me for 6,000 or 5,500. I'll see what he thinks of that. Keep in mind I do get a 90 day engine, powertrain warranty. What do you guys think I should offer?

I wouldn't spend more than 5K on it, even with the warranty and what not.

yeah, $6500 is a little steep. Try offering $5000 and see what happens. I bough my 97 with 60K mi for $5300 in 2003.

Tell him $5k cash in hand. Money in the face of a dealer talks pretty loudly. If you must, go out and pick the truck apart for its inperfections to coax them down even further.
