manuel hubs

i finally bought the warn premium hubs and the conversion kit...but,

i cant seem to get the locking ring off the outter piece of the automatic hubs that are on the truck now. this piece im refering to is the ring that locks the inner part of the hub into the axel. It is also the last thing to be put back on before the outter coverning of the warn premium.

does anybody have any good ways to get this ring off without breaking it. thanks

I found that a scribe w/ a 90 degree bend it it works well. Just put it in behind the spring and work it out. Think everybody has there own way of pulling these things.

Are you talking about the locking ring "washer" or the inner Axle Nut. If you are talking about the nut you need a spanner Socket. It looks like a Cup with four posts on it. if you are talking about the washer, i used the 90 degree scribe that Fishin Machine talks about.

how do you get the wheel retaining nut out from the old warn automatics, is there a different spanner nut socket? the four prong spanner does not fit in the warn automatic. Thanks

The wheel retaining nut is behind the lockout hub. Once the lockout is completely removed the four prong spanner will fit. Ford used the same nut for every 4x4 they made until the sealed bearing assembly's came out around 1998.

Right, behinfd the first nut is a washer use the 90 degree scribe to pull that out then the spanner nut will fit over the last nut.

well, i have the spanner nut and when i put it in the hub to try and remove the origional wheel retainer, it neither catches nor seems the right size to fit on anything. i know its the right socket becuase it fits into the groves in the new manuel converson kit that i have. the instructions in the converson kit show that the wheel retainer needs to come off.(from the origional). it looks like a bigger socket could be used to get around the wheel retainer, but i dont have one or know if i even need one.

HAve you removed any of the nuts from with in the hub. or are you trying to remove the first of two. Not all the sides are even so turn it until it slips on. I had the same problem at first too. if it fits the new manual nus then it should fit the old hardware. That is all i used when I changed mine.

I take it your going to converting the 3 bolt to the 5 bolt right ?
The nuts have a bunch of holes in them I just used a needle nose plyers.
There's a spring style lock in the keyway that has to come out first.
Just pull it out towards you.
The big c ring that holds the hub in is a pain to get out because the auto hubs hang out so much more then the man.
Take your time you get it.

From: Destin/Ft. Walton Beach,
Ford used the same nut for every 4x4 they made
Then why did I need to use one wrench on a 79, and a different one on a 96? You can trust me when I say I didn't need to be buying any tools at the time. I had 2 other Ford owners trying to help me, but they had 94 or earlier auto hubs. They came to the same conclusion as me.

If you are referring to the large nut inside, you need to use a four prong socket, which you can get at any autoparts shop. FWIW, there are two different sizes of this socket, if the one you have doesn't fit, you need the other size.

i have the four prong spanner socket, but that only fits onto the new bolts for the warn premiums(i cant even find any holes for a pronged socket), im looking for what the equiviliant of the four prong socket for origional equipment is, which i believe are warn automatics. ?? it seems like it is just a large socket, but i dont know what size??
