4x4 Question

I recently bought a F250 with manual hubs. My question is can i leave the hubs locked if I'm driving in two wheel? or is that bad for it and do I need to put the truck in neutral to engage the 4 wheel ? I know this is probably a stupid question but my last truck was all automatic. Thanks for the help

Its OK if you're tooling around off road at low speeds, and suspect you may need to engage 4wd at any point. I wouldn't run them locked on the street, as it will just be more drag, and it could possibly wear something out prematurely.

As for engaging 4 low, your owners manual should tell you precisely, but I am pretty sure you should be stopped in N to engage it. That's how it is even for the ESOF system.

You'll be fine - I lock my hubs anytime I think I might need them. I have been driving on pavement for years with locked hubs up to a week at a time and other than the fact your rotating the front axle, it does not present an issue - certainly wouldn't worry about wear issues or breaking anything. Mileage doesn't change, or if it does it's been so minor as to be hard to measure.

The only time you'll have an issue is on dry pavement with your hubs locked and transfer case engaged which ties it all together - other than that it's cake - lock em if you may need them.

Oh for the record, booker is right about 4LO - you can go to 4HI at any speed but 4 LO requires you to come to a complete stop, shift to nuetral, then shift to 4LO - that momentary clank or crunch when it engages is normal so dont sweat it.

Not trying to thread jack, but what controls the engagement into 4-Lo in a truck that has a manual shifted case? Is the neutral thing defeatable? As my old 78 Jeep had no such thing.
