Hey all I am making a small scale wind tunnel for a science project and I was wondering if anyone knew what they used to create the smoke line to test airodynamics? an info would be great. Is it like a chemical reaction?
Any hobby shop that sells model trains should also carry small smoke generators. These use small pellets or liquid and heat it to generate the smoke. Seuthe is a common brand.
I saw a wind tunnel once many years ago in an aeronautical engineering lab that used heated glycerin (similar to heating grease in a frying pan, but done in an enclosed container with a discharge pipe). The very dense "smoke" that was generated was piped directly to a manifold arrangement that had individual nozzles about 2 or 3 inches apart and pointed down stream in the wind flow. If the tunnel was opened without stopping the "smoke", there was really very little "smoke" that was actually being generated. Quite impressive how it worked.
Use a brass tube, cut the top at a 45º angle facing towards the rear, angle it slightly towards the front of the tunnel, and it should work with minimal distortion. You'll probably have to experiment with what size tubing to use.
