This morning in Michigan I had some big drifts in the drive way so turned on the 4h and the switch clicked and the light came on in the inst. cluster but the front wheels never engaged . I tried several times with no avail. I've heard about a solenoid that does the shifting but I don't really knowwhere it would be or what needs to be done to it .
There are two electrical points to check, the connection at the xfer case (shift motor), and the solenoids under the hood passenger side firewall. If you hear the click, generally it's not the solenoids. The usual suspect is the shift motor in the xfer case.
The final spot is the vacuum lines at the front diff. These engage the front diff to the drive line.
Try 4 low if the vehicle goes in low gear and the front wheels dont pull the problem is up front. I've seen the shift fork and coller in the front diff. wear out. but first check and make sure you got vac going to the front diff. and make sure the vac switches when you activate 4 wd.
What year is your truck? I know Ford had some problems with the collars in the fron forks breaking. I know mine broke on my '03....I know some other guys with '03's and they had the same problem. Your best bet is that it's a vacuum line that came unattached....that's a easy fix.
If the 4x4 light comes on the problem is most likely the front axle disconnect shift fork. I have seen several of these broken. have also seen the shift fork shaft siezed into the diff housing.
