Just recently my reverse lights (both of them) stopped working. Truck is an '03 Expedition. Any idea as to where to look? All other lights, brake lights and signals are functioning fine.
Also, not a huge problem but more of an annoyance. About half the time when I'm starting the truck, all the gauge needles peg out to the high side, stay there for a second, and go back to normal. This also resets the trip odometer. Any ideas?
On your second issue it sounds like your battery is about to crap out. The behavior you describe typically occurs when the battery has been disconnected and the PCM 'reboots' (so to speak).
The backup lamps are switched by the Digital Transmission Range (DTR) sensor mounted on the transmission.
Check your owner's manual for the correct fuse (and light bulb) for the reversing lamps. I only have drawings up to '01 which shows the reverse lamp circuit to be protected by fuse F5 in the under-dash fusebox.
Owner's manuals can be downloaded from www.fleet.ford.com if you don't have one.
Backup lamps work fine. It's the sensor that beeps when there's an obstruction behind the vehicle. I checked all the fuses that could be remotely related to that system, and all are fine. What really throws me for a loop is that occasionally, the system will work fine, but most of the time I just get the message "check backup aid" in the message center.
Gee, I guess I must have gotten confused by "reverse lights (both of them) stopped working".. You didn't say anything about the sensing alarm system for backing up being at issue.....
