Temperature Sensor?

I am taking out some after market gauges that the PO put under the dash and the temp sensor goes to a bolt which screws into the block on the drivers side of the engine to the rear of the carb. Is this an after market temp sensor and is it a water temp sender. If I disconnect it what do I put in it's place I really don't want to use the after market gauges. I bought a new wiring harness and am trying to install it. By the way it's '56 F100 with a 312 Y-block. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

If you don't need the hole in the block for an original temp sender, then you can plug the hole. It should be a pipe tap threaded hole (npt). ...Terry
