I just bought a 1986 F150 yesterday and the box is in bad shape. It had some major work done to it in 1993. I was wondering if anyone knew where to get one around northeastern PA. My other option would be to build a wooden bed. Does anyone have ideas on the box or plans to build a wooden bed?
Go to www.car-part.com and see if any of the junkyards have any in your area. You can use the later beds up to 96 and even later beds off the 250's till they changed them. The only difference in the 87 up beds is the top of the rear wheel opening is round instead of flat.
You can buy patch panels, but the first bed on my truck was not fixable in my opinion. There is a formed box below each taillight, which is welded to a U-channel which goes across the rear of the bed. If the area below the taillights is gone, and has broken loose from the rear u-channel like mine was, I don't think it's worth fixing, since you can't keep the rear of the bed from flopping around.
If that part of the bed is good, you can get patch panels for the outside over the wheel wells, and panels for the center of the bed. My second bed is starting to get a little rough, so I patched the outside, and put a bedliner in it to fix the holes in the bed. The rear portion is still good thankfully.
I've had a wooden box on my truck (83 f-150) for some time now, and never been disappointed. it won't win shows, but it hauls tons of gear, and the extra weight of the wood (probably weighs 5-8 times as much) really helps in the winter on the icy roads.
