I picked up this 1964 f350 that hasnt ran for 10 yrs I tried turning over the engine after I squirted a mixture of oil and penatrating oil in the cylinders thru the sparkplu holes, I have had good luck in the past doing this, I pulled the starter because it wasnt turning over and had it rebuilt. well installed the starter and it cranks slowly then locks up, I checked the starter on the bench and it turns nicely but who can tell when it gets in the truck. It makes alot of rackett when turning over and it doesnt turn over very fast. I turned the engine over by hand with a breaker bar and it doesnt seem to turn too easily{without starter installed} so I am wondering what to do next without tearing into the engine. The engine set without a carburator on it for a few years,It was taken off and laying in the seat, I guess it was removed to see if it would fit on another truck the owner had but didnt so they left it in the seat. I rebuilt it. I looked inside the manifold with a light and mirror but of course I couldnt see all the way in but I am afraid I wont beable to get intake gaskets for it but I havent checked yet, was hoping to atleast get it to fire up abit before I started getting too serious with it...Any suggestions?
You can get intake gaskets (or about any other std. rebuild part you need) from NAPA, or AutoZone.
Even if the engine was covered, you'd be surprised how much moisture gets in the cylinders from condensation. It likely has rust on the cyl. walls. As 312 said, I'd try towing it & popping the clutch. You've got nothing to lose (that is, as long as you have brakes).
I have the truck at my house now, we trailered it here. We had to drag it up on the trailer, the driver side rear dual is locked solid the others wheels were locked but popped free as we winched it to the trailer. No I dont have brakes or atleast probaly not the rear brake line rusted in half and the both master cylinders were dry of fluid, I put some fluid in the resivoir but havent tried to mess with it. I have thought to tow start it but with the rear brakes locked I would just be dragging it. When I first got the truck I tried the brakes but the peddle was froze until I applied more force then it went to the floor. What would be the best way to get the rear dual wheel unfroze? I am figure I am going to have to try and knock it loose with a big hammer once I get that far. I would like to get her fired up
If you can't pull it. Maybe it will crank over with the starter with the spark plugs removed. You can even try spraying pb blaster or something down the intake wile you are cranking it.
UH OH what spacer I didnt see a spacer when I pulled the starter out! I have since tried to turn over the engine without the starter installed. And it is hard to turn then goes to a stopping point. Which I had it turning over and actually firing a little but no start, the starter was making a loud laboring noise. can this spacer fall down inside the block area and lock up the fly wheel or cause it to bind up? The starter is a centrifucal type starter that the speed of the engine throws the gear back into place
Is there a rubber spacer inbetween the starter and the bell housing?
Also is the fly wheel cover on still it maybe in side there.
Hope you find it or able to get a new rubber spacer.
what diameter is the spacer?. does it seal the starter to the housing? I havent pulled the flywheel cover off yet because of the cold but it sure does have me curious. Not sure where the spacer would have been if there was one on it
it seemed to me when I removed the starter that it was mounted solid to the bell housing but I could be wrong, I suppose it could have fallen off while wiggled the starter out of its location, But with the long neck of the starter gear assembly if would have thought I would of seen it, but again I removed it in the dark with just a flash light laying in the yard so you never know, I will look at it tonight.
Is it a hard type rubber that would compress or solid like a fiber washer?
