I pulled the valve covers off my 460 to change the gaskets, and on the passenger side there was a lot of build up that looked like carbon chunks from the bottom of a grill. What's the best way to get this out of there without letting it fall down into the pushrod holes? I was going to scoop it out with a rag, but I don't know the reprecussions from letting this stuff fall into any holes. I was going to use an old shop vacuum to suck a lot of it out, as I don't have an air compressor.
What would cause this kind of build up? It doesn't look like oil, but more like carbon.
It's baked oil. You're engine is running very hot in the heads and the circulation is poor, so the flow of oil is very slow, and it gets baked. Most engines suffer from this as they age.
Use a shop vac and scrape very carefully with a plastic scraper, with the suction hose as close to your scraping area as you can. Go slow, and it should go into the shop vac. If stuff falls in, change the oil and filter when you're done cleaning it all out.
Here's an idea to clean that engine out a little more. After you've sucked all the chunks out, switch to diesel oil for a while. It's got a lot more detergents in it and it'll clean where you can't. Then do an oil and filter change back to your normal quality oil.
Do be careful if the diesel oil doesn't have the same specs as your normal oil. if so, it's probably best to baby it until you switch back.
Thoughts?
Fred, Does the 460 always run this hot? Maybe additional cooling would help as well.
I'll give the cleaning a try. The temp gauge usually sits a little to the left of the middle, right around the E in TEMP, so I haven't noticed it getting too hot. I have only had the truck a few months, and this is the first time I have looked under the valve covers, so no telling how it ran before I got it.
I was curious though, because it burns and leaks a lot of oil. One reason I am changing the valve cover gaskets. Sometimes 2 quarts in a 60 mile trip.
