Is it OK to flush the tranny in my '99 PSD? I have a buddy who has a shop who can flush for cost of fluid but all I read is about changing the fluid. Do people not flush because of cost or will it harm my trans? Thanks
You'll want to drain the TQ also. You simply remove the shield and turn the TQ until you see the plug. Remove and let drain. At the top of this page there is a gray header, click on articles, trannys and select E40D and it will tell you how to do it. It would be nice if you could get that shop to do it while they're in there.
Do you know if it has been drained before?
How many miles on it?
Go to User CP on the top left in the blue header and fill in your signature also, it will help us out when you ask a question.
Some mechanics say flushing will do more harm than good and the tranny sometimes wont work as well as it did. They say a fluid and filter change is all thats needed.
Flushing a trans will not cause any damage. I drain my fluid instead because i believe the more often you disconnect a line, the more chance you have of promoting a leak at that fitting. Although draining a pain and torque converter does not remove 100% of the fluid, with the oils condition after replacement being 95%+ replaced tells me its fine. I have used this method on all of my domestic & foriegn vehicles and have never had a transmission failure for almost 30 years (though I really don't like automatics, but my wife does so this relates specifically to her vehicles and the 69 Ranchero 390 GT I did own once)
I was just repeating what I heard on an auto repair talk show.
That auto repair show was probably talking to the grand majority of viewers/listeners that are basically a Harry Home Owner self proclaimed fix-it-all.
For some of those folks, yeah, any kind of maintenance can be harmful.
I don't proclaim to be a wizard at anything except breaking stuff. I don't watch those type of shows simply because they're too basic.
If ya read carefully and follow what others on here have successfully completed, you'll be able to handle MOST tasks. Of course there are limitations without the proper tools and a dry, warm garage.
I have heard on flushing the filter got knocked off with the pressure of flushing.
I have not looked into flushing tranny "how too's" Am wondering how all fluid is replaced? Also the sludge that is always on bottom of pan, is that removed?
If you take a glass of dyed water and suck water out while replacing with new, will 12 ounces flush and get rid of the orginal 12 ounces of dyed water?
