Lots of guys are running true dual exhaust with 2.5" pipe.
I had a local muffler shop build me a three inch single exhaust for my 86 when it had the original 6.9 in it.

Either way will give you a bit more power and it will sound better to.

Bassproguy07,
I had a local shop bend mine from right in front of the two downpipes coming together back the stock route to the stock end location.
Pipe was 3" and the muffler was see through. Made a bit more noise, power was better, fuel mileage increased slightly all for only 250 dollars. But that was several years ago.

Smacustoms,
The only bad thing about 3" from the manifolds is the stock 2.25" ID pipes are all that will fit the clamps on the manifolds. You would have to swedge several pipe sizes to get a nice transition to the 3" pipe.

If I were doing this kind of exhaust I would probably go with 2.5" ID pipes to the muffler and then the 4" outlet pipe.
Cost would be the only reason for this other than it would be easier to adapt to the 2.25" ID manifold pipe.
I have no doubt the 3" system would run good and sound nice as well.
