4 X 4 not engaging

Hello all. looked thru some of the archives, not sure if i have the same problem that i read about a few threads

Last couple times i needed to engage 4 X 4 it didn't want to go, was stuck in a ditch with about a foot of water and no go. found out later that i coulda manually turned the hubs at the wheel but didn't know at the time.
well after getting out of the ditch the 4 wheel drive was now in low and NOW they worked, but couldn't get them to Dis-engage. stopped, backed up. neutral, brake pedal etc. after doing all kinds of crap they finaly dis-engaged.
am thinking that there is a vacuume loss keeping them from either engaging or disengaging.
what would be the easiest fix?
think it's a o-ring leaking? Hose?
what would be the cost and can i do it myself?
should i go with the Warn hubs?
sorry for all the ?s
Michael

IMO the only thing that the vacuum operated 4X4 system is good for is to keep your tuxedo clean.
Yes. Convert to the Warn hubs. I wonder if the transfer case will accept a manual lever. Anyone know?

Yeah, what Kwik said and to add, the vacuum lines going to the hubs are flimsy rubber tubing, easily punctured or torn allowing water into the hubs. Not good. I know from first hand experience about that. Get the Warn manuals and remove/plug the vacuum lines.
