i have 1986 F150 4x4 had a 4.9 with manual trans has been swapped with a 460.having trouble with starter grinding.replaced ring gear and starter still does it anyone have any ideals? don't know what the flywheel came from.engine came from a lincoln thanks for any help.
Have you tested the starter to make sure it actually engaging? If the starter is engaging properly during testing, and it is engaging on the truck, its possible you might have a bad spot on your flywheel. The solenoid can also make a clicking/grinding noise, if it does not have proper voltage.
Good luck,
Rick
thank's for the replies. it had the wrong starter on it. it does make a difference on the lenght. some one had put a 460 engine in the truck before i got a holt of it and already changed the starter becuase it was grinding.the problem was the ring gear mostly but they changed the starter trying to fix it. so when i got it i put a ring gear in it but still the starter was wrong.didn't know what the problem was so i asked ya'll. found out the hard way but thank's for the help.
