I remember seeing new blank serial number plates for sale in one of my older F100 catalogs, but can't remember which one? Does anyone know if they still make these? If they do, how do I get the letters/numbers punched into the plate? I'm assumming this is legal, because one or two companies sold them? If they're not, does anyone know where I can get a used 55 plate at? There aren't many 55 Fords around here, if there were, I would just get one off it. Also, on my old 55, the VIN plate was on the inside of the glovebox door. Is that the only place they're at or is it on the frame somewhere? Thanks
OldguyZ is right-Mid-Fifty sells the blanks-stamped and unstamped. If I remember correctly, it's $30 unstamped, $100 stamped. I think you have to provide some sort of documentation for them to do the stamping. This same subject came up a couple of months ago so you might try a search of this forum.
Good Luck,
Kent
Thanks guys! I must've saw it there then? I'm not sure if this 55 I'm going to get has one or not and the fella I spoke to, doesn't know much about them. I will check on the frame rail, when I go look at the truck next weekend. Is the original plate supposed to be on the inside of the glovebox door? If I do the stamping myself, does anyone know where to get the tool or whatever it takes to do it, at? Thanks!
Ugh, I found a press to stamp the plate, but it costs a nice $1400 bucks....? I also found a smaller press kit for $400, but that's still outrageous for a one-time use?! Hopefully, when I go get the truck, it will be on the glove box door or on the frame or wherever it's supposed to be?
Yeah, but here's the thing, in Alabama, vehicles before 1975 weren't required to have titles and they need the proof that you're the owner and all before you can order the stamped one. The fella I'm gettin it from said, when he opened the glove box, that there were numbers, but no plate..... So, unless the number is on the frame rail somewhere, this truck my not be worth buying?
Just be sure the # on the frame rail is on the bill of sale, that's the "real" #. Register the truck with your state, they aren't likely to want to see the # unless it comes up on the stolen vehicle list. Once you have the reg in hand make a copy and order your plate. Easy!
Depending on whether you need the numbers/letters to be raised or indented, Harbor Freight sells a 36 piece 1/8" stamping set for cheap. The stamps look bigger than 1/8" to me, but are very close to what you'd need. You'd have to do each letter/number individually, but hey, beat the price. It's item #00800. I just checked my '52 and '51. The '52 has the numbers/letters raised from the plate, and the '51 has them stamped into the plate (indented). Hope that gives you another option. Stu
Thanks for that link to Harbor Freight! But still, nobody has informed me if the VIN# is on the frame rail or not? The fella I'm trying to buy it from has tons of old cars and trucks and is an older man, so I hope it isn't stolen?
It should be on the frame rail someplace the different factories weren't always real consistant as to the exact location, and you may need to clean it off to see it. I wouldn't worry too much about buying it. It's likely the plate is where it belongs unless someone took the glove box door. Worse comes to worse you could always replace the frame with one with a good #. Where were you planning on getting a number from to put on a replacement plate if not off the frame?
Hmmm, I'm not sure, I know where there is a trashed 53 F100, that I could probably get the plate off of? Around here, anything that old, they don't really care about it, as long as it has some kind of number on the Bill of Sale. They don't even look at the vehicle anymore. He said he has another 55 cab in good shape, cab only, no frame, that has the plate in the box still. Well, if you're sure it's on the frame somewhere, I will dismantle the truck and find it! I also wanted to get one of the new blank plates and customize it, for new engine, tranny, and rear end ratios. Will, I'm praying that's it's on there somewhere? I miss my old 55 and these things are getting hard to find....?
