EGT gauge install
If you want one for the sake of having more information on your dash then go for it.
I drilled and tapped my exhaust manifold on the second cylinder on the passenger side. My ISSPRO 1/2" NPT probe is about 2 1/2" long and probably sticks a bit into the port on the head. I drilled the manifold at the re-inforced part of the manifold. It almost looks like the spot was intended for this service. To access the manifold I removed the right tire and mud guard which gave me good access for drilling and tapping on the exhaust manifold. I ran the wires along the frame and drilled a small hole thru the floorboard on the passenger side to get my wires to my gauge in the cab.
The sensor location I chose gives me an almost instant temperature reading being that close to the exhaust valve.
Some folks measure exhaust temperature on the outlet pipe after the turbo, but that temperature reading can be several hundred degrees cooler especially if you run a large, open exhaust.
The pistons are what the pyrometer is to protect, therefore the thermocouple should be close to the pistons.
There are several grommets through the firewall in the drivers side area that you can put the lead through.
Also I got a pillar mount for my pyrometer so the gauge is up where you can see it good.
With the thermocouple in the drivers side manifold there was plenty of wire to reach the gauge.
