351 vs 460

I currently have a 300 I6 5spOD but i'm looking at runnin 37" mudders and a 7" lift(not a everyday driver, just a mudder). I was wondering if i should stick with this and regear, i was leaning toward a 351 or 460 but was unsure which one would be better. I'm looking at a crew cab 1 ton or a ext cab f250. Just looking for a thought on stick with it, 351, or 460.
thanks
brian

I would stick with the 300I6 if it's just a mudder. But if you are going to change the motor, then go with 460.

i have a 1994 f-250 pickup with a 460c.i. with all kinds of stuff under the hood i've upped the power to about 397 and torque will get up to 435. its got stock gears and 35X12.5 wranglers onit and i havent got it stuck yet it will eat up the mud and everting else but the only downfall is the gas max get is 11mpi

The 351 will be no improvment in torque over the inline-6. If you decide to do it go with a 460, it will be a major improvement. There is no replacement for cubic inches.

I'm running a 460 myself and I'm no expert on mudding, but one upside to the 351 is its lighter weight. I've had to use 4 wheel drive in places where my dad's 2wd 302 was able to get through (snow). All the extra weight up front makes the front end harder to push. I'm sure the extra weight will make it sink deeper into mud too. I've heard of guys with diesels talk about weight being a problem when mudding. Also, I think (not sure) that the 351 may even be lighter than the I6. It's definately a few hundred pounds lighter that a 460. Hey, if the budget allows, how about a stroker 351. Big cubes and light weight!

now turbocoupe that all may be very true but if you go four wheel with 460 vs a 351 or 6cyl i guarrentee you willgo further ive done many times and theres been times ive pulled em out you get traction for the power and i can prove it ive got a small lift 35's and a longass wheel base weighing about 6500lbs and those 351 stroker tend to blow because of the difference n compression

From autos.msn.com:

300cid I6 = 145 HP, 260 ft/lbs
302cid V8 = 180 HP, 280 ft/lbs
351cid V8 = 200 HP, 310 ft/lbs
460cid V8 = 230 HP, 390 ft/lbs

So, the I300 and the 351W do not have the same torque ratings.

The 460 offers the most torque, but at the expense of additional weight and poor gas mileage.

However, anyone who is *seriously* building a mudder, rather than a "backyard toy to play with", knows that wheelspeed is very important. Your goal is enough wheelspeed to "float" your way up the mud, much like driving an ATV across a body of water. So you want an engine that can run higher RPMS and the gearing to match.

hi there,

Personally if i were you, I would go with the 351W, because of the simple fact that the bellhousing is the same as the 300. The 460 would undoubtably have more power, but would take a fair amount more work to put in. Both are great motors and both would give you more power than the present 300. Or you could always build up your six to throw out more power, that would actually probobly be the cheapest route and most economical too. However whatever you decide to do, I would still regear to at least a 4.10 ratio, in order to stay in your motors power band on the highway.

460 the only way to go in a heavy truck leave the small blocks alone unless you build them up and then the mpg won't be any better i took a 351 out of our truck and put a 460 in and my mpg went up and alot more power

Don't go there Ron.

Why?

my F350 crewcab has a 351W with well over 350K and it's pulled, hauled, towed anything I've asked it too. Only recently has the engine gotten tired. And rightfully so. It's old.

Sounds like it too.

But if that truck had crummy gearing, it would sink like the other truck did.
