Oil Leak ?

My '01 diesel has develped an oil leak recently and I can tell it is somewhere on the top of the motor and running down the back around the trans, but can't find exactly where the leak is coming from due to all the clutter on top of the motor.

I can see small amount of oil puddled up in the valley under the turbo towards the rear and can see some oil residue close to the inside of the valve covers, but not able to locate leak yet.

I haven't looked really hard yet and need to clean it off, but is there a common oil leak problem on the 7.3 ?

Thanks for the info. Do you know of a website that has repair illustrations ?

Is the O-ring on a oil-line or the turbo housing ? I assume it is on the housing since it is an O-ring which means turbo must come off ?

Try tightening all the clamps on the tubes going/coming from the Turbo. I had mine in for oil leak and they syeamcleaned ands tested and tightened three clamps (6 bolts).

No more leaky.

The tech said periodically check and tighten. They rattle loose after awhile.

Funny you mention this because I noticed some oil residue around all the connections between the turbo and head. I tightened the clamps and was surprised by how much I could tighten them. The hoses have "Oil Residue" labeled on them so it must be normal for them to have some oil going thru them which surprised me since it is an "intake" for air. I really didn't think there would be enough oil in them to cause a problem but maybe it did because my leak appears to be gone now.

I didnt quite undertstand why the oil was there either. Those boots sure are pretty after they are clean. Took it to the dealer with dirt all over them. Got it back and had pretty blue and red boots.

The tech told me to periodically check them. I did recently and they are still tight. Sounds like it takes about 60K +- mi. to loosen up.

Glad problem is gone.

I wouldn't have thought there would be ANY oil in there and it must be normal since Ford put the "Oil Residue" on the hose connections. It is on the pressure side of the turbo so there must have been a air leak if there was an oil leak.

Well, still have oil leak. It obviously takes a while to get enough oil leaked out before it starts leaking down the back of the engine. I cleaned it off again and have looked around with a small flashlight and still can't see where it is leaking.

It has to be around the backside of the turbo. ?? I had a co-worker with a SD which developed a terrible oil leak and it was an "O-ring" problem. Could this be the "O-ring" that seals the turbo to the housing ?

Is there O-rings that seals the housing (pedestal) the turbo is mounted to to the block ?

I remember my co-worker paid approx $400 for this repair. Is this close ? I have the ability to do repair myself, but want some info before I start. Thanks

I think that's what the problem was in the SD forums too.
Not too bad of a repair cost.

Well, have a leak again.

It is coming down back of block/starter like last time BUT the valley is not filling up with oil like last time so not sure if it the pedestal this time. Strange to me that oil is coming down in same area, but not filling up valley this time. I have couple drops of oil each night that fall and this leak seems worse than previous leak.

I have seen some post about the intercooler lines leaking and mine have some residue on them, but can they leak enough oil for couple of drops/night to fall ?

I talked to mechanic that replaced pedestal 0-rings and he gave me some dye to put in oil and drive for couple days so he can check with blacklight. Funny to me that he had an ambulance with 7.3 in his shop with oil leak in same area and he was in the process of taking the front seats out to get engine cover off.

Mine ended up being the high pressure oil pump seals. $23 parts, $180 total, if I remember right, I've tried to block it out of my memory.

I looked closer last night and I do have oil in the valley, but not as bad as last time and the intercooler hoses are not leaking oil. I don't have any oil up around the fuel filter, isn't that were the HPOP is ? Is there any HPOP lines that run to the rear of the engine or under the turbo ? The oil is running down the passenger side at the rear of the block and down on the starter.

You would think as big as an Excursion is there would be more room in engine compartment but I guess a Turbo/Intercooled/V-8 engine is a lot to stuff in there.
