Napa open air filter mod

Kwikordead: I have a question for you or anyone else that would respond. I did the open air filter mod. Went on very nice just like you said. I went on a drive with high expectations of noticeabe improvement and was somewhat dissapointed. I really could'nt here the turbo wine anymore than usual. Maybe it did seem a more peppy. What I didn't like was when it shifted into 2nd or 3rd with me getting on it pretty hard, it made a really funny noise like it was skipping or fluttering. It wasnt the turbo wining. What was this noise.

That was just Darth Vader telling you that it was a good mod to do. He says you have an extremely unrestricted air flow to the turbine inlet.

What you are hearing is the pressurized air leaking back past the compressor turbine as it slows due to lower engine rpm's and thus lower exhaust gasses to drive the turbine.

Thanks Pop. Is this good or bad. The sound it makes really sounds like something is messing up. I dont know enough to describe the noise it makes. If its ok, it is what it is. One thing I didnt mention, is that I am running the 80 hp tune with my Diablo Predator. When I shift into 3rd or 4th, it really jerks hard on the shift. Is this normal.

What you are hearing is you intake compressor wheel is stalling out due to too much boost. I had the same problem until I installed a "wicked", or "superior", or "swisher" wheel. Basically the exact same thing with a different name from different vendors. It's not that hard of a job to do and Johnny8 did an excellent write up on how to do it.
Click on my signature where it says "4 inch exhaust is not enough". There is a link there that says "Wicked Wheel pulling a hill 24k". You can hear how much better it works than the factory wheel. Plus they only cost about $70.00 so it's a very affordable mod, and worth EVERY PENNY.

Here's a link to one of the site's sponsors that sells the wheel.
It's at the bottom of the page.

Kwik is right...i have an 80hp chip and the wicked wheel and when i'm pulling a 9000lb camper uphill the WW winds up and sounds just like a jet engine winding
up for take-off . I love listening to it...definately sounds better pulling a load up hill than just going WOT. BTW, do u have a nice set of gauges to monitor your powertrain with? Important stuff when using power enhancers.

You guys are great. I appreciate the tips. No, I dont have any guages yet. I just did the open air filter today and I am having 4" exhaust system put on tommorrow. I have been playing with my Diablo Predator installing and testing all the tunes. I was afraid to do to much without having the larger exhaust and air intake mod done. I know I need to get guages and I want to take you suggestion on the wicked wheel mod.

gotta have gauges...! i strongly reccomend that you do not load anything more than the 60hp tune when running empty and don't tow anything until you get those gauges... you can run up your egt's really fast with that predator... i should know..!

Yeah, without guages, you're asking for major engine failure due to WAY too high of Exhaust Gas Temperature using the 85 HP setting. I recommend backing it down to the Tow/Haul setting until you get guages. ESPECIALLY with the stock exhaust system.

i have seen a video clip of a sled pull at night. this cummins had 5'' stacks. near the end of the run,the ground was glowing orange, from the downpipe. he had fire, not flames, FIRE, coming out of his stacks that were 5' high. and then what made him stop, a bunch of sparks and chunks of metal shot out of the stacks.

I am getting hooked as bad as you guys are. I can relate to someone here on the site when they said they were having their mid-life crisis with their PSD. I have read but its been a while on the guages. Do I need to just get the cluster and have boost, EGT and trans temp.
