I have a huge long list of things that need to be done to the 56, since I just bought it. No clue if much will get done though. $$$$ = not much left.

The truth is, I will spend a lot of it preparing finals for my students. Yes...we hate it as much as you do.

When I moved some crossmembers that were riveted, I used an air chisel. I was very loud, but took very little time. It knocked the heads off with ease and then I just drove the rest of the rivet out with a punch. Good luck.

Going to test fit my 9 inch rear axle under the '55. Fit the new steering column in the cab to see how it will join to the Toyo steering box. Paint the front axle and springs. Mount the front axle and new shocks. Wait for more parts to arrive, tie rod and airbag mounts. More cleanup on the frame rails.

Wait for more money to buy more parts!

Brian_B,

So you're a teacher! What subject(s)?

You know we won't feel sorry for you preparing papers over the weekend...I mean it's not like you don't get all friggin summer off and about 3 more weeks inbetween the school year! Boy the work I could do on Euphemia with 10 to 12 wks off a year........

Not to mention, it's a normal 2 day weekend for us Canucks. (and a darned cold one too!)

[hijack] Yes...I teach part time at two colleges (tech campuses). I have too many health problems to be hired full time by anyone. I teach various AutoDESK software programs. For now its just AutoCAD 2006 (2D and 3D classes), Architectual Desktop 2006, and Inventor 10, but that will change as more students are added. We have a lot of other software titles and its all been approved by the state.

I do have tons of time off, however, since I am not full time.... When I am off its on my own time. No $$$$$$$ Preparing papers, grading, etc. is all on my own time.

I am off about 3 months in the summer, 2 weeks around christmas, and spring break. Usually I am able to find something to do when I am off long. no $$ = no fun.

Ask anyone who teaches...we don't do it for the money. In my case, its about the only job I can get. [/hijack]

Anyway, we will see what I can get done this weekend. I need to replace a light on the dolly we broke (borrowed dolly). OOPS! :P

Hopefully I will complete the final fitup and cab floor replacement on Willard. I have rebuilt the front cab corners and rough fitup the used floor. I have that 5' butt weld at the back of the floor ahead of me. Just picked up a larger bottle of Argon for the TIG. I have already been thru two small bottles (about 1 a week)

Run a 3/8'' drill bit thru the rivet head, when you are down far enough the head will spin then use the center drive to knock out the stem. It's clean and quiet

Beside trying to digest the turkey I'll be eating, I'm going to put the wood back in my truck and install the stainless strips hopefully completing the bed of my truck.

I'm hoping to get the front sheetmetal off once again and safely stored in the attic of the garage (til Christmas break), as well as getting the cab lifted off and onto the storage dolly. All of this in preparation for the frame stretch that will be getting going here in about 3 weeks.

I am having to remove a few rivets to repair some frame damage. I intend to go back with grade 8's on mine.

we've done this before but I'll repeat it, when you bolt them back use a bolt with a short shoulder so that the threaded area is not being used to carry the stress. Hope that's clear.

Just FYI...Grade 8 is actually overkill. Henry's rivets have less strength than a grade 5 bolt. No problem with being stronger than that, but if all you had was grade 5, you'd still be better than stock. Rivets are squeezed to set them. Try squeezing a grade 5 bolt sometime.... Hardness = strength in bolts.

Bearing on the shoulder (unthreaded shank) of a bolt is preferred (as FF56 says) because the bottom of the thread is where vibration can cause the bolt to fracture .

But, I digress...

Thanks for the help, I should have that project tackled this weekend. Man those U-bolt nuts are tough to get off! I think one in four bolts on this truck come off like they should the rest need a little more motivation.

Happy Thanksgiving!
