7.3 life expectancy

I have a 2000 f350 psd /automatic. What type of miles will I get out of the motor and tranny. I have 85,000 now and was wondering if i should start looking for a new one before the 100,000 warranty is up thanks.

I wouldn't start looking yet unless you just feel that you need a new truck. I have a 99 F-350 with the automatic and 178k with no problems. I plan on getting 250k out of it before I buy a new one.

My 99 F250 diesel has 206K miles with a auto tranny replacement at 83K miles.
The 00 Excursion diesel is driven by my wife and has 151K miles with original tranny.

The plan is to drive both vehicle into the ground possibly buying a dually 7.3 next summer when the pick up is finally paid off to have a vehicle to pull the heavy dump trailer. So between three 7.3's I should be able to get 1 million miles between them before thinking about doing a motor replacement!

My Uncle has a 270K mile 97 PSD that runs very strong.

I think that the motor will outlive the tranny. Not to say that it is a bad tranny, but they tend not to last as long as motors IMO. The key to auto trannys is regular fluid changes. Every 60k or better is what I reccomend.

That said, one of the guys I work with has over 250k on his 7.3. He runs the hell out of it and it comes back for more. He does not dog it, but at the same time doesnt baby it. It is a 6 speed with a lift and big tires.

It's my understanding that the engine is designed to go at least 300K with proper maintenance. The motor should be one of the last good things left on these trucks. I'm at 249K with no oil consumption, no leaks, and 19mpg highway.

I sure hope that it'll go more than 300,000 miles! My '99 F250 CC Longbed just passed 298,000 miles yesterday with no problems so far! I change the oil regularly and air/fuel filters, thats all the work I have had done to it.

The previous owner (family member) said the tranny gave up around 60,000 miles and was rebuilt, no trouble since.

I don't see any other truck in my future that is not a PSD. I have had Fords all my life, and a couple of Chevy's but never a PSD before. If I had to buy again I would go for a stick shift though. Lots of people here and people I know outside of here have had better luck with their E4OD's than I have.
If the tranny on my truck held up as good as the motor I would start buying some bodies and cabs for spare body parts. I'll have it until the end. Maybe I still will if I get some more faith in the tranny. New products are out almost every day now, and someone will find a fix or I'll save up for a BTS or similar.

95 had 298k, sold it, btw selling that truck was the worst thing ive done in a longe time. I should have kept it. It ran as strong as or better than a new one!

02 is just getting broken in.

Here in canada where they salt the roads in the winter the engines long outlive the bodies and frames.
