Drove about 100 miles today with the new plugs and wires and the engine never shuttered once. In fact it ran about as good as it ever has, especially at an idle, and we've owned it for four years. I'm curious to see what kind of mpg it will get now.

The mechanic also thought the compression problem was with a valve, but didn't seem too concerned about fixing it just yet. He just said to check it periodically. I'm gonna check the compression again soon to make sure.

The catalytic converter didn't seem to be damaged from getting too hot, so that's a plus. I should have just replaced the plugs and wires myself, but the old ones seemed fine to me so I thought it was something more serious. Hopefully the problem is fixed so the wife will stop driving mine!

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it. However, I'm sure there will always be something else come up in which I will need some input!!

I'd lean towards bad wires. The plugs may have been wrong but they usually don't crap out all of a sudden (especially when you pulled them and they looked fine.)

Now wrong plugs as in BOSCH platinum plugs - I have seen those destroy a new set of wires/cap and rotor before but that was on a chevy s-10 pickup.

The plugs were BOSCH, but not sure what type. I was kinda surprised motorcraft plugs weren't in it. My wife bought the pick-up about 4 years ago with 20,000 miles and it has never had the plugs changed under our ownership until now. Which makes me wonder who changed the plugs at 20,000 and why. She bought it from a ford dealer, so surely they didn't put in Bosch plugs before putting it on the lot. It makes me wonder why the previous owner changed them. The ranger has 83,000 now so I knew it was about time for a new set anyway, I was just surprised they had already been changed, and that early too.

People change things all the time even on new trucks off the lot because they believe the hype from advertisers about "increased performance, HP, gas mileage" etc etc.

Yep probedude is right on as usual, people will fall for advertisements any day, no matter what they say. I am guessing you put Motorcraft plugs/wires in there, that's a plus for the engine. I'll never run anything else (on my Ford anyways).

Well, the pickup started up with the old tricks again, CEL, rough idle and shaking while going down the road. 1 bottle of seafoam later; CEL is off and pickup runs as good as it ever has. Ran 1/3 pint through brake booster vacumn line, and the rest in the gas tank. Two days later no CEL and runs perfect.

not ever changing spark-plugs with 83,000 miles on it is never a good thing. it can cause all kinds of problems.the electrodes were probably shot and that hurt the wires which may have hurt something else.
