99 F250 PSD 7.3 engine problems

I have a 99 F250 Crew Cab Super Duty PSD. She has 60,000 miles on her now but she has had 4 maybe 5 of the 8 injectors replaced, 1, 3, 4 and 6. I had a new transmission put in at 25,000 when I took it in for "rough idle" and "loss of power". Picked it up from that dealership and took it to another (because prob wasn't fixed) and they replaced fuel and air filters and 2 injectors, that fixed the problem.
I always fill up at major truck stops because of the injector problems. 2 weeks ago again "rough idle and whole truck shakes" I replaced fuel filter, no help and took to dealership. Again 2 injectors later..fixed. Drove 500 miles pulling a 6000# trailer on a trip with no problem then on the way back, "major loss of power". Couldn't get above 63 mph and when the "turbo kicks in" air conditioner temperature would drop to warm and a high whistle (new sound) would last til the turbo went back to normal.
Took back to dealership they said it was the air filter. Picked it up on Friday. 3 days later tried to make it 7 miles down the highway couldn't get above 40 mph then speed steadily dropped to nothing. It was "shaking", "rough idle", "didn't sound right" and "it felt like the whole truck was fixing to come apart in pieces". I towed it home with the engine running and by the time I got it home it seemed fine. A wrecker towed it the 40 miles to the dealership. They can't find a problem. Any suggestions? And what is a PCM? I read about it on other posts?

Thanks,
deb

deb, what you have is a mechanic problem, change mechanics. a pcm electronically triggers the injectors by metering fuel to the engine as required. fuel pressure is regulated at 40 psi, when it drops below this problems such as yours arise.your truck has a single supply pump that pulls fuel out of the tank routing it through the filter directly to the injectors.
does your truck idle ok all the time? if so i would have a mechanic check your timing on your injection pump, then check; fuel return line, air in the fuel, blocked fuel supply, remove fuel cap listen for a hissing sound (loud) if so replace cap, fuel tank filter, the work that you have had done would have given alot of opportunity for air to get into the fuel and i bet that is the problem.injectors usually good for 150,ooo miles.then 1 or 2 at a time go bad. also, a easy fix but too easy prob., have you drained the water off the collector? if they dont know how to check for air in the fuel, tell them to replace the return fuel line on top of the pump with a clear hose and check for bubbles while idleing. hope this helps, but believe me your motor is protected from nearly anything thatt could damage it,even stupid mechanics.try a truck mech.

ok i went back and saw that you did say it idled rough.if it idles rough all the time it is still fuel related. either air in the fuel or the pump is off timing or bad, kink in fuel line,or maybe bad fuel solenoid. now if it idles ok after warming up then it has to be the injector pump adjustment and that is a very technical thing to work on.

LAST EDITED ON 03-Sep-01 AT 01:39 AM (EST)[p]Hi thedeb. Read the replies to your post. Yes your engine has a transfer pump. But no injection pump. Each injector is its one pump. Timing is all electronic. It is controlled bye the ecm & the cam positioning sencor. If you read back in other posts you will see many threads on the subject of the cps. They seem to go bad often. Not saying yours is. But sounds possible. They are not to expensive and easy to change. Lots of people pick them up put them in and no more problem. I would also Question the valve cover gaskets. As they carey all the elecricle signals for the injectors and the glow plugs. There is a plug on the back of each valve cover. make sure all conections are good. well thats my 2 cents worth.
