supercab seats

Hey guys, I am building a 79 supercab and was looking for aftermarket seats front and rear. I would like to have buckets up front with a console with matching rear seat. Any ideas? I was thinking newer expedition seats or ch**Y tahoe. I can fabricate so mounting is not a problem. Thanks, Marty

I don't think there are many seats that will fit in the back. My supercab has jump seats, but those aren't comfy so I took them out. I eventually want to get something back there that is more comfortable for people slightly larger than midgets. I think I may end up having to fabricate the entire rear seat and have them built so people can sit diagonally for more leg room.

I would also like to hear any ideas people have.

You're out of luck in the back. I researched a lot of combinations and you just cannot fit a "proper" seat back there. Just an idea for the bucket seats up front though: If you pull a set of seat brackets from a 78 or 79 Bronco they will fit the Supercab floor pan perfectly (totally different than standard cab). This will allow you to have a passenger's seat that flips forward for easy acess to the back and a driver's side that slides way forward for better acess. On this note, if you use the Bronco brackets be sure that the bucket seats you use are not too tall or you'll be hitting your head on the ceiling. I just installed 6 way power heated leather buckets and had to ditch the whole bracket plan and build my own. It's just a little tough to get into the back now.

Hey Ivan, do you have any pics of your interior? I haven't seen any in your gallery except a couple old ones.

I don't have any pics right now but I'll snap some maybe tomorrow if I don't space it off. The seats I installed are out of a newer Explorer, Eddie Bauer edition. They came with a fancy wiring harness so I disected it and cut out all the memory controls and wired it with just 3 wires in (negative, + for seat power and + for heat). They also had headrests with TV's but I gave up on that bling idea and sold the headrests for a couple hundred $$. Right now I have no headrests but personally I like the lower profile of the seat backs. I'm not sure that I'll bother adding any headrests at all.

Will try to get pics tomorrow morning.

Where do you get seats like that from newer cars? and how much do they usually cost? Surely you can't find that stuff at junkyards...

I got mine off ebay. The local junkyard sells them all the time but they're pretty pricey. You can pull your own seats from the self-pull wrecking yard too and you can get some pretty nice buckets for cheap but not the fancy electric stuff, at least not around here. I think I paid $600 for my seats and then I sold the headrests for $300 so I've got $300 into my seats. They'd run $400-$600 a pair at my junkyard without the TV headsets.

Hey Ivan
Did you end up mounting both of them solid? I was talking with you a year or so ago about your seat brackets but they would have put my head through the roof! I ended up mounting mine solid for now, but I am trying to come up with a way of mounting the passanger side so it will slide and tip forward so you can get in the back.

Yes, they are solid to the floor. There's a couple options though. If you get seats from a 2 door car or something like a sport Explorer they'll be made to tilt the backs way forward already so you can crawl in the back. You'll still need to step over the corner of the seat but it won't be any harder than getting in with the old split bench that came stock in these trucks. My seats are not made to tilt too far forward but I can raise and tilt the whole seat with the motor control and make just enough room to squeeze back there now. My plan is to build an extension on the arm that controls the seat back so that it will tilt farther forward. This will be easy to do, I just haven't gotten to it yet. So to get to the back I'll need to move the seat forward all the way and then pull that lever to pop the seatback forward. It's not a big deal because it's rare that someone rides in the back. That area is mostly for tools and junk.

Alright, snapped a few shots. I moved my seats a little farther toward the door than most probably would so the driver's seat is off center about 1.5" to the left. I did this to allow plenty of room between the seats for my shifter, nitrous bottle and possibly a little console of some kind. There's 18" between the seats. The heater button on these seats is for decoration only. I disconnected it when I re-wired them and the heat will be activated by switches on the dash. 6 way power control on the seats works, then there's the seat back tilt lever and the forward **** is for lumbar support. These are REALLY comfortable to ride in.

Nice. Looks good. I'm going to have to hunt around and see what I can find now.

Thanks for taking the pics.

I just did a search on ebay for "leather power seats" and came up with tons of good stuff. Keep in mind they do weigh a lot, especially with the motor units on them so expect to pay a hefty price for shipping. Regardless, you can get some nice seats for $200-$300 (sometimes less if you're a vulture) and even if you pay $100 to ship you're still ahead of what you'd pay locally or what you'll pay for new custom power seats. If you're lucky you may find an auction in your town where you can pick them up and save on the shipping.
