About craigslist. Not everything is free- they generate about $10/mill in revenue a year from Corporate ads. Two billion page views per month, with over 8 million visitors. I'm a devoted CL'er- found one car, our house, and the dog on CL.
I'm a big fan of that site. I found an apartment on there, a bunch of potential roommates (as well as potential nutjobs) and am a huge fan of the Rants n Raves. I'm on there kind of often actually.
I check out CL all the time when I'm looking for something. That site's really grown over the years. Simple, clean, easy to navigate and corporate will pay to find employees with special skills. If you're a big corporation looking to fill a job that maybe 1% of the population can do, you go to the job boards and see that most of them cost $300 - $400, but the most effective one only cost $25 to $75 - the decision isn't that tough... (I found my Ranger on CL.)
I read it pretty often. Wichita's not the most active CL in the world, but KC and DFW are pretty busy. I saw a really clean '79 C/S on the KC list....too bad I already had one. It was nicer than mine, had a camper with it, and was priced lower.
Craigslist never runs ads. All their revenue is generated by charging $75 for a job posting in certain markets (NYC, SF, and a couple others). Everything else is free, no ads.
Between my friends and I, we have found everything on craiglist. Dates, cars, apartments, jobs, even my girlfriend (coming up on one year).
Some info, that pretty much says what already has been said. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craigslist But there is some history in there along with the ebay thing.
I'm calling about a toolbox ad that I saw earlier today. I saw the ad, traded a few emails with the wife. Hubby will be home to talk about it later this evening. My tools might have a new home for Thanksgiving!
Some of them are hilarious...but there are definitely some freaks out there. The Philly one has been a little lame lately. Check out the "Best-Of"...they're usually awesome.
My politics are pretty different from the majority of Philadelphia's too, so bringing out the propoganda guns is usually good for a laugh...they're easy to get a rise out of.
I found my Taurus SHO on there. Haven't really checked it out in-depth though (the site I mean, not the car!) For some reason, I stay pretty busy on this site and don't get around all that much...
I usually check CL out, before checking for something on Ebay. I thought it would be fun to do one of those little labor jobs for someone, like the "take a load to the dump" or "fix my fence" jobs.
