Well thankfully you picked a VERY common swap into Rangers. Try searching the forum, lots of results will come up. The search button is at the top of the window, below the main bar (User CP, FAQ, et cetera), to the far right, on the main forum page.
You're talking new engine (duh), mounts (lots of them available), tranny, electronics, possibly radiator and sheild, new pumps, and maybe a new fuel system, not too sure on that one, not sure if the LP/HP pumps could get enough gas for that 302.
Somebody with a V8 will chime in, just give 'em some time.
ty ranger pilot...dosent sound to bad at all...im seriously considering that swat because i use mine ALOT off-road and pullin a heavy car trailer and am wantin to make more horse power outta my lil beast lol
you will have to trim you heat plenum. also if you have a manuel trans. dump it. it cannot hold the power of the 302. if you have a4ld dump it. it barely holds up to a 4.0 i would find a c4 or c5 auto, they make bellhousings that match up to the 302. as said they make motor mounts for this. it is also recommend that you body lift for it will give more room for the v8. this is done bc the trans galley is more narrow than on a f150. aslo you may have to relocate the rad closer to the grill. and depending on the 302 you have and how close the acc. ride on it. you have to get at electric fan for clearence issues. and of course if you run a efi 5.0 you will need all aproiate wiring harnesses and eec. im sure there is more to it and ppl here are resoursefull and will be glad to offer advice if you get jammed up.
Make darn sure if you go with a carb'd engine, you get something to step the fuel pressure down from your tank. Shooting 45PSI of gas into a carb probably istn the best for it. Yeah, pulling engines and putting them back in is really fun, i reccomend it for everyone. For the ranger you need motor mounts, remote oil filter, possibly different size driveshafts, tcase adapters for 4x4, maybe different front driveshaft lenght. the computer and harness if efi, FPR for carb'd. Probably a bigger radiator, and maybe an electric fan too. If its 4x4 it makes everything cost more.
it can be done I have a 302 with 2 barrel Carb in my 87 Ranger, It goes pretty good though MPG is pretty bad but then I have a heavy right foot also.
good luck with your quest. James Duff is an great place for parts and due some searching on the web there are several sights that have how to's on doing the V8 swap.
From what I've heard, you can get pretty decent fuel mileage with a 302 in these little rangers. But on the flip side of the coin, big engine in a little vehicle= tire burnin engine revving fun! I know if I put a small block in my ranger..... I'd be racing puddle jumpers all over town!
i have a either 77 or 78 302 rebuilt from top to bottom and it has 4 barrel carb on it wiring wont be and issue i dont think
Since you have a 94 model truck, I would strongly consider (if I were in your shoes) a 94ish 5.0 Mustang drivetrain. Your truck is fuel injected, so why not NOT bother with changing fuel pumps and other garbage to carb that truck with an engine that has no more power output numbers that your 4.0L v6. Wiring isn't really an issue IF you have the Harwood manual and even without that, it is not all that big a fuss. Pre-88ish engines are smogged out, so power wasn't a priority back then.
Of course, if you built the heck out of that engine you have, go right ahead with it....
hey i know a guy who is selling a 1980 f150 with a 400 for only $300. could i drop this engine in my 3.0L 1992 ranger? and i do have a manual tranny and would like to keep it that way.
