Hey guys I'm rebuilding Spudco's old FE for my neighbor. I tore it down and need some identifying help.
Block - Part # is ground off
Heads - C8AE-H
Crank - 2U
Rods - C6AE-C
Rod Bearings - Ford C6AE-6211-S-T
Main Bearings - Ford 6333-AE-AF
Pistons - only say "390-2V" on the sides.
1. I don't have a mic, so are those bearings STD? They don't say anything about oversize.
You can never have enough tools. Go get yourself a mike, or at least a good digital caliper.
You have a 390 crank. You have 390 rods. You have 390 heads with 68-71cc chambers.
I would guess, based on the numbers, that the bearings are standard, especially if they're Ford bearings. Same for the pistons. Usually if things aren't standard, they wont be Ford parts any more. Example: Clevite bearings and pistons that dont say "390 2V" would indicate something different. But buy the tools and do it right.
Thanks Rusty, I am going to buy a mic. I just don't have one tonight.
Everything looks decent on this motor and my neighbors on a budget. So,
- Crank will get emery polished, then new main bearings
- Pistons look good, bushings have no side slap
- Quick drill hone on cylinders, new piston rings.
- New timing chain,
- Oil pump is tight/clean,
- Not sure yet about cam or lifters. They appear not worn much. Nothin' worn near as bad as my FE was.
I guess I'm going to get parts from Autozone unless I can find 'em cheaper. $50 clevite main bearings, $26 Clevite Rod bearings, $20 stock timing chain.
I recommend a 0-6 inch, .0001 micrometer set, if you are lazy then get a digital one that has accuracy to .0001. My digital only goes to .001, but its plenty handy for alot of quick measurements. My next tool needs to be a dial bore gauge.
As for the parts, sounds like it is bone stock. It is a 390 though.
Close enough. Stock dimension for the mains are 2.7488, and the rods are 2.4384. Looks like you have about .002" wear on the rods, if your caliper is correct. Take the reading in different places, and take readings 90 degrees apart. I think you'll be surprised. Kind of fun to see how they wear.
Ok, well cool. Sounds like I'm ready to go buy some new parts. I guess I'm going to look into an RV cam now, I wonder if Autozone sells any good ones...
please do not buy a speedpro,melling, clevite camshaft. They are worthless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was going to say something, but I figure he's read enough to know what we think. If he doesn't want to believe it and wants to get a underperforming cam, that's ok by me.
-sigh-
Ok, I'd recommend you go with a Crane grind. The 343941 is recommended for towing, as is the 343901. Pick one to match your compression ratio.
Oh for sure, I know to stay away from those things from what I've seen you guys say. This motor will have stock compression since it'll be using the original pistons etc. So what's that, 8.5:1? Where's the cheapest place to buy a crane cam?
Well, I have Clevite 77's in my engine, that had been in a box since about 1985. If what I'm reading on Summit is right, the P series should be about the same. They work, so that's what I recommend.
I got an old junkyard 360 for $35 a while back for spare parts to build my 390. It had badly damaged Federal Mogul bearings in it, with one spun rod bearing.
I'm sure lots of engines have gone lots of miles on either bearing. The above is just my experiences, for what they're worth.
Cool, I just checked my bearing boxes on my build and I have Clevite 77's as well. On my build I used a EPWI cam, same grind as a CRN-343904. What do you think about that cam from the specs?
Well so far from Summit I've picked out:
CLE-CB760P rod bearings - $30
CLE-MS863P main bearings - $51
SUM-G6608 roller t-chain - $42
and still picking the cam
