First of all I would like to say hello to every one . My name is Jess and I have just bought my first Ford truck to restore. It is a 1978 F1-50 and I can't wait to get her finished.
I have a question about my truck. On the bed of the truck, on the passenger side there is a storage compartment . I haven't seen one like it before. Any ideas?

Welcome to the site, Just a guess, but I'd say it's not stock. What does it look like?, and it could be somthing a previous owner installed.
Hope you have fun with the rebuild, and good luck.
I remember seeing them...way back then in the stoneage....its on the lower portion of the bed in front of the wheels....has a aircraft style latch handle...I remember seeing that setup on camper special f-350s ....but it COULD have been an option on any F -series I guess....
It's a not so common option on the trucks. I can't say I've ever seen one on a short box, but I would estimate 1 out of 25 or so trucks had the option installed.
driverbill nailed it. It was listed on the option sheet as "Bedside toolbox". It wasn't a common option, and there are fewer and fewer trucks out there with them every year. I have seen about five in this area, two of which are just sitting rotting.. It's a shame to see the old girls sit.
So maybe I have something worth hanging on to and restoring then, huh? Thanks guy's. Maybe, if I will pay attetion, I will learn a thing or two about Ford pickups.
I guess my next step will be to choose what engine to lay down in her. I am thinking a 351. Then maybe slap on a black with purple metalic flake paint job. Heck , if I work hard at it I could have her done by the time I reach,oh, 90 maybe 91. I am 35 now so I think I might be able to pull it off
I agree about the 400 motor. If you build it right, without all that smog cra* they can be one hell of a engine.
I've never heard of the bedside toolbox thing, only reason is I've never seen one. Trust me I've seen hundreds of these old trucks in my area, one the road, peoples houses and farms, in junkyards, and never spoted one, guess it wasn't a big thing down south.
