Fog light "project"

Hmm I just got this idea last night and need you guy's opinions as to whether it will work or not.

I have a '94 XLT Regular cab, 4.0L manual. I have the wires behind the bumper for fog lights, even though my truck didn't come equipped with them.

My question is, are they live? Do they get power? I was thinking I could get the lights and put them on the inside of the grille, far off to each side so as to not block air flow, and use them off at friend's houses or whatever.

I have two extra switches located in front of the stick below the dash, could I use one of them? How hard would it be to do this? Price estimate?

Thanks for your help, I think this will be my new project!

To check if they're live just get one of those light tests, just about everyone has them. But mounting behind the grille would look pretty cool whenever they're turned on, and not affect the stock look. You should be able to wire into the switches, but where are the switches from? Who installed them?

Price is going to be whatever you make of it. You can get lights at Autozone that cost $50 for a pair and they'll work, or you can spend $150 for Hella's or KC's... depends on personal preference. The wires might also be wired into headlights for the fog lights in the front air-dam on some of the Rangers.. don't know though.

I installed the switches myself, for another project. Turns out I didn't need them and they are just...there...lol.
I gotta figure out how to wire them before I can try a test light. On the bright side, my neighbor just installed two running lights on the front of his Bronco, so I have a reference for how the wiring should work. The plugs look like normal headlights plugs, so I was thinking I could use normal headlight bulbs, but I gotta find a way to protect and mount them.
Any idea on whether it's legal to leave them on while driving in Texas at night? I figure I won't chance it without a definitive answer. I'd like to get blue lights, as the truck is blue and a blue neon under-truck kit is on it's way. Thanks.

EDIT: Scratch that, I must be smokin' something they DO NOT look like regular headlight hookups. They are odd-shaped plugs with what looks to be holes for four prongs.

I need to know where they end, anyone have any ideas for where I could get to them and switch their power supply?

They aim straight downward, so that could be a good alternative if all else fails, cast light on the ground. Thanks again.

94's used a fog light relay so you would have to add that (it's in the PDB). I'd expect that there is a fuse required for the light too; I'd have to pull up my old CD for a 94. I've read that the harness is ready to go, just plug in the appropriate components. I've also never proven it; I just made sure my old 94 had the option when I was scoping them out on the lot back then . Hella's were OEM on Ranger. Why not have a lookie on ebay and see if someone is offering the correct valance, brackets, and fogs.

*Make sure that the wattage of any aftermarket light is s/t it does not exceed the current capacity of the OEM wiring. OEM used 55 watt bulbs.

What's the PDB? Sorry if it's a stupid question.
I was expecting the fuse, I'll look at the Hella's and see what I can come up with. And thanks for the 55 watt note!

If you don't already have one, you would probably benefit mucho by buying a service manual on CD and ideally a Ford one. Once you have this awesome, affordable and highly comprehensive manual, the Chiltons and especially the Haynes can be put on ebay or in a round filing cabinet; you'll never want to go back . One of our FTE sponsors would be worth looking into, as well as ebay.

Hmm...lemme just open eBay and see what they got on there. I was lookin' at the Haynes at my local Western (Advance) Auto, 20 bucks, wasn't sure if it was worth it or not. It seems to be though.

I'm in the process of adding driving lights on my '04 Edge. I raised the license plate mount up 2.5 inches and have put two small 55W oval lights under the plate (in the valence). I have ordered two 4.5 inch round lights to go in the area on each side of the license plate. I will have to cut the valence slightly and modify the light mounts. I'll add them to my gallery when I am finished.

Aight cool Dono, thanks for the help.
I'm still toying with the lights in the grille idea. I would love to drill out the centre of the grille behind the Ford logo and put some sort of bulb that illuminated Ford in those beautiful letters when I flicked the switch, but I think I'll stick with regular lights inside the grille.

Try reading my thread where I did exactly this on a '98. I've done it on my 3.0 and my 4.0.

<a href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-113174-Foglights%20on%20%2798">Foglights on '98</a>

I think I and others who did it hit most of the pitfalls.

I finished adding the driving lights to my '04 Edge valance. This required cutting notches in the valance to accept the 4.5" inch lights and moving the license mounts up 2.5" to allow room for the small oval lights. I have added the photos to my gallery if anyone wants to see them.

Awesome link PSKSAM2, thank you very much. Your model is later than mine, so everything body-wise is different, but the electrical knowledge definetly helped!

I have flipped from my original plan a bit. You guys all remember I said I was going to put fog lights inside of the grille...well that won't pass inspection here if they are wired as foglights.

SOOOO, I did a little lookin' at my grille. Two perfect plastic spots on each side where I can mount lights. My neighbor just put lights on his Bronco's bumper, and I'm looking at the same kit, they are BRIGHT and just what I am looking for. I wanna put mine inside of the grille, that's my real goal and the only thing I really wanna do with them.

I just have one question, is it gonna cut off air flow to the radiator too much? My truck runs cool from what I see, the radiator temp gauge never gets above about 1/3, I do mostly city driving with a highway jaunt every now and then. So what you guys think, how will it work? Thanks for all the help.
