I have a 2000 SD with V-10, about to clock 71,000 miles. I've only changed the oil regularly, 1 trans service and 1 serp belt. I have about 20,000 heavy towing miles on it. This truck has been bullet proof, original battery, no weird rattles or squeaks, seats are still firm to my 250+ lb. butt. I know the coolant ought to be changed out. I almost don't want to mess with it. Any recommendations for preventative maintainance beside what Ford says in the owners service manual?
Thanks,
Steve
Do you have the green or gold coolant?
If it's gold it's good to 100k.
If it's green, there are a few manufacturers of extended life (or service) coolant, up to 300k miles. Do a search on here for many opinions on the extended coolants and decide.
If you are replacing green with gold, you need to do a complete flush. I think I saw an article on here about flushing.
If you did not do the recommended 60,000 mile service...that is what I recommend. Then start following the service schedule from your 71000+ miles after this 60,000.
Here is what FORD recommends for 60,000 mile schedule off the Ford website:
Present Service: 60,000 Miles
Change automatic transmission fluid
Change engine oil and replace oil filter (Up to 5 qts of motor oil)
Change rear axle fluid
Inspect and lubricate steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and, if equipped, half shafts drive shaft and u-joints
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system
Inspect complete exhaust system and heat shields
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses
Inspect wheel ends for end play and noise
Lubricate 4x2 front wheel bearings, replace grease seals, and adjust bearings
Perform multi-point inspection
Replace engine air filter
Replace fuel filter
Rotate tires for optimal tire life
Glad to hear that your SD has been bullet proof...especially the V10...as I am a V10 owner myself. I have my 2003 SD SC SWB XLT 4x4 V10 3.73s scheduled for its 90000 mile service the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
Replace engine!!!??? I'll get on that right away. It seems like the 60k service came and went and I slept through. I think I'll call my local ford dealer for an estimate. Thanks everyone.
When ya get the dealer estimate for your 60k post it here. I'm guessing about $731.00 for what you could pay 60 bucks in parts from our sponsors.
Dealer wanted $900 for a 30k, that was the last time I spoke to them. Home grown maintenance now...

That's some serious $$$...I just got my 90000 mile service quote from one of the local dealers. Was told $300-400.00...if NO problems were found.
OBTW...the 90000 mile service is almost the same as the 60000.
Here is the 90000:

Third item from the bottom of the service list.
My 30k service was about $240. That included a fuel filter replacement. I have about 8 months and 29,000 miles left on my warranty. I might end up doing it myself.
