It has been starting kinda hard since I bought it a few months back more on the first start of the day. I brought it to a ford shop and they had no clue. They said they checked the glow plugs and they all looked good. I had it in the garage the other day and started it, turned it off and when I went to start it again it wouldnt. I replaced the gpr and still nothing. Thought the batteries may be bad put two new ones in and still nothing. It has some smoke comming out of the tail pipe but no fire. The next thing is a small black thing under the hood runs all the time when the key is turned on and I really never heard this before. It is located right next to the starter relay on the right side fender. There are a few hoses going to a box about 6 inches away. No clue what this is or if it is bad or not. It is like a motor running all the time. As you can tell I really dont know much about these being this is my first one. Thanks for any help you can give.
that thing you mention on the right fender, that is the vaccuum pump.
i dont know much about your problem with the engine. it MAY be a bad cam shaft position sensor. someone will chime in here soon with a more detailed answer. meanwhile, do a search here for CPS, CMP, or camshaft position sensor.
also, have you checked to see if there are any codes?
Thanks for the quick reply. Should that pump be running all the time with the engine off and the key on? When I try to start it the rpms go up just a little bit so that sensor should be good right? Thanks again
I am guessing that with that running all the time, and leaking somewhere that would cause it not to start right? Thanks again. Oh and where would I begin to look for a leak?
Did anyone ever check the hpop oil reserve? My 95 would do the same thing, and it was caused by a leaky valve in the hpop. If the oil isn't within one half of an inch of the top of the hpop tank, it wont start very good if not at all.
With smoke coming out of the tailpipe, the CPS is good. Look to a glow plug sytem failure. To verify, plug in the block heater for at least two hours and try and start it. If it fires right up, that means your glow plugs are not coming on. The relay is the most common failure.
Oh and any more input on that pump running all the time would be great. that cant be normal is it. It stays on the whole time the key is on. Would this cause the starting problem?

The vacuum pump running constantly has nothing to do with your starting problem. You most likely have a vacuum leak at the front wheel hubs.
Pluged the truck in all night and it still wont start. Any one have any other ideas?

The high pressure reservoir is above the high pressure pump on top of the motor in front. Pull the 1/8 NPT plug on the top to check the oil level.
One other thing it might possibly be, is there is a small tube that goes from the exhaust manifold on the passenger side up to the top front of the engine. It hooks to a sensor at the front of the engine on top, beside thehpop oil res.I'm not sure the proper name for this system, but I know that if the line is plugged with carbon,or thesensor is faulty the truck will have trouble starting. My dealer checked it out when I was having trouble with mime not starting. They said it was a common problem.
Well guys I think Im going to have to bring it in to the shop. Ive done all that you guys said and still nothing. Cant get it to fire at all. No clue. Any last advice before I bring it in. thanks
